When the New York Mets begin their 2026 season, one former All-Star closer will not be on the roster.
Manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters Craig Kimbrel was informed he would not make the Opening Day roster. He’s now deciding what’s next.
“Now he’s deciding whether he wants to stay, which looks like he’s leaning that way. He likes it here. He wants to win.” Mendoza said . “But he’s also going to look around for opportunities.”
Kimbrel, who has an opt out in his minor league deal, had a 4.50 ERA in six Grapefruit League outings this spring. The 37-year-old showed flashes of what he could bring to the bullpen, he’ll likely begin the year in Triple-A.
The veteran right-hander won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018. He was dominant throughout his three seasons with the organization, but has bounced around MLB since his departure.
Kimbrel spent the 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros . The 37-year-old also had a brief stint with the Texas Rangers in 2025, but never pitched in a big-league game for them. He latched on with Houston after being released by Texas.
In 14 appearances last season, Kimbrel amassed a 2.25 ERA and had 17 strikeouts in 12 innings.
