The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets released their inactives for Week 7 and the biggest surprise is a veteran defender who will be down for Miami.
The inactive lists are out for the both the Miami Dolphins
and the New York Jets for their Week 7 clash. And while the New York list offers a confirmation of a Sunday morning report, there's a surprise on the list for the Dolphins.
After fighting an illness this past week, veteran linebacker Willie Gay Jr. is inactive against the Jets. Here's what it likely means for Miami's depth chart.
Welcome back to action, Kyle Louis! The fourth round rookie is inevitably going to step into a sizable role for the Dolphins today against the Jets. It's an assumption, but I would guess Miami lives in more nickel personnel throughout the game against New York. That means three cornerback combinations of JuJu Brents, Jason Marshall Jr., and rookie Chris Johnson. It also means Louis serving as a third safety who can play in the slot, with Johnson kicking outside and either Brents or Marshall Jr. coming off the field.
The size of the workload for Louis will be a storyline to watch. It's a fascinating idea that he would be activated on Saturday from an injured reserve stint and then quickly be handed a big chunk of work.
In Miami's last game before the bye, second-year defensive tackle Kenneth Grant played sparingly against the Cincinnati Bengals. He would seem to be in line for a bigger workload in this contest. And the offensive line of the Jets will be undermanned - veteran starting guard Dylan Parham is out today, too.
Gay Jr.'s illness cost him time at practice this past week. And now it is presumably costing him a game day opportunity against the Jets. If Louis plays well, it could cost Gay Jr. a whole lot more, too.
