- Miami's Chris Johnson turns repetition into results as Dolphins enter bye week
Chris Johnson has heard the same message since the Miami Dolphins gathered for offseason workouts – keep attacking the football, even when the takeaways do not come.
That persistence finally paid off Sunday. The rookie cornerback forced a fumble in Miami's 31-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the Dolphins one of their best defensive moments in a game that dropped them to 0-5 entering the bye week.

Johnson finished with six tackles, including three solo stops, but the turnover was the play that stood out. Cincinnati running back Chase Brown caught a checkdown and moved toward the goal line before Johnson forced him back inside, located the football and punched it loose. Chop Robinson recovered for Miami.
"Really, just repetition, man," Johnson said Monday. "Once I force it back inside, I just see the ball, and it's just opportunity."
Johnson said Miami's defenders have worked on punching the ball out since organized team activities. The attempts had not produced many favorable bounces through the first month of the season, but the rookie said the defense could not allow the results to change its approach.

"We've been punching at balls since OTAs, and we've been punching at balls every game," Johnson said. "We just haven't been lucky enough to have one fall until yesterday. So just keep going, keep trying. Don't get discouraged by the result."
Johnson also believed he held his own in his matchup with star Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase. The afternoon was not mistake-free for Miami's defense, but Johnson viewed it as another step in learning how to handle the swings that come with playing cornerback in the NFL.
Johnson said he has grown since a difficult season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. Naturally self-critical, he is learning to leave both successful and unsuccessful snaps behind once the next play begins.

"Really understanding what the next play is, whether it's a good play or bad play, just move on to the next play," Johnson said. "Understand that my teammates got my back and I got theirs."
The first-round pick has started all five games and has 31 tackles, two passes defensed and one forced fumble. His versatility has allowed Miami to use him outside, in the slot and as an occasional blitzer. Johnson said working through traffic inside requires the defensive backs to stay on the same page while operating at different levels to avoid collisions.
Miami's rookie class has been asked to contribute immediately. Johnson said those early opportunities have allowed the group to demonstrate what it can do rather than dwell on its youth.

Now the Dolphins have a week to reset before resuming a season that has opened with five consecutive losses. Johnson does not plan to spend the break away from the team facility. He expects to lift, work on techniques that have slipped and use the time to restore his body.
"Having any sort of time off is kind of dangerous to anybody," Johnson said. "You might just end up sinking into the couch at home. Just being able to get up and get in here in the building and just hit the field." Veterans have encouraged Johnson to treat the bye as a chance to return as close as possible to preseason condition. For a rookie still adjusting to the weekly demands of the NFL, the pause is less a vacation than another opportunity to improve.
