- Michael Carter II gives Eagles insurance amid Andrew Mukuba injury news
The Philadelphia Eagles spent the offseason building versatility in their secondary, and that depth could matter when they visit the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Drew Mukuba's availability remains uncertain, as he's been labeled 'questionable,' but Nick Sirianni has already made it clear that Philadelphia has plenty of confidence in Michael Carter.
Philadelphia's head coach, as is customary, spoke to the media on Friday. When asked about Carter potentially moving to safety if Mukuba cannot play, Sirianni didn't hesitate .
"Obviously, Michael's played a lot of football, and I have a ton of confidence in him. He has great versatility to be able to play multiple positions, and he's worked his butt off to be ready to play that safety position. We'll see how that goes. My confidence level in the group itself is very high. Drew's made a ton of plays and [S] Marcus [Epps] has made a ton of plays. When I say that, I know Drew hasn't played a ton of football games, but I mean in practice and in games that he's been able to play. And then Michael's played a lot of plays. I've got a ton of confidence in that group."
Sirianni isn't pretending that Mukuba's potential absence doesn't matter. It reflects the Eagles having another player they trust. When he says Carter has "worked his butt off to be ready to play that safety position", that matters. That detail doesn't suggest someone was thrown into an unfamiliar role at the last second.

Michael Carter has been preparing for this possibility
Carter's versatility has long been one reason Philadelphia values him, and that flexibility could give the Eagles a little more security. If Mukuba can't go, Philadelphia can turn to someone who has already been preparing for the assignment rather than scrambling to create an entirely new plan.
That becomes even more important against a Titans offense that the Eagles expect to challenge in different ways . Communication, discipline, and understanding responsibilities will matter, particularly in the back end.
Nick Sirianni isn't worried about the group.
Sirianni's expression of confidence in the entire safety group is telling. Rather than singling out Carter as the only answer, he also mentioned Mukuba and Marcus Epps. They, along with Cooper DeJean, give Philadelphia a lot of versatilit y.

That matters because Philadelphia's plan doesn't appear to depend on one player replacing another snap for snap. The Eagles have multiple options, and Sirianni believes the group is prepared to handle whatever Sunday's personnel situation demands.
The final decision will depend on Mukuba's health as we near kickoff, but Philadelphia can at least approach the weekend knowing it has a contingency plan. Carter has already done the work at safety, and his ability to move around the secondary gives the Eagles another way to handle an unexpected absence.
For a team heading into an early-season road game, that kind of flexibility can be just as valuable as having a star sitting at the position in the first place. Depth matters in this league. Every campaign is closer to a marathon than a sprint.
