Everyone watched Michael Harris II send a three-run shot over the wall in the first inning to seal the deal, but the biggest surprise wasn't the home run. Ray Kerr, a pitcher who had Tommy John surgery in 2024 and never threw a pitch in 2025, provided the actual shock. ESPN reported that Kerr made his postseason debut in only his fourth career start on Thursday night. He threw 3⅓ scoreless innings against a Philadelphia lineup that rallied to win Game 2 and force the deciding Game 3. That is not just lucky; that is a miracle for a team that needed every ounce of depth to survive.
The Phillies thought they could steal Game 3 and advance to the NLDS, but they ran into a wall of Atlanta pitching. Kerr allowed just one hit, which went to Kyle Schwarber in the first inning, and issued one walk to the same batter in the fourth. He faced left-handed hitters like Schwarber and Bryce Harper exactly as manager Walt Weiss wanted. Weiss needed a lefty to get those specific bats out of the box, and Kerr delivered when it mattered most. After Kerr left the mound to a standing ovation from the 41,731 fans in the sellout crowd, he lifted his arm to acknowledge the noise.
Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies added the finishing touches with solo and two-run homers of their own. The final score was 6-2, but the story belongs to the guys on the mound who stopped the bleeding. Since their 2021 World Series triumph, the Braves had not secured a postseason series until now. The Braves secured their first-ever playoff series triumph against the Phillies, a team that had beaten them in the 1993 NLCS as well as the 2022 and 2023 NLDS. The history books finally got a new entry for Atlanta.
The Phillies' plan fell apart because their ace, Aaron Nola, could not find his rhythm. Nola walked Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson with one out in the first inning before surrendering Harris' three run homer. According to ESPN, Nola was removed after surrendering three runs over merely 1⅔ innings. This situation differed sharply from the pitcher who recorded a 2.92 ERA alongside 82 strikeouts across 83 1/3 innings between July 5 and September 17. Although he surrendered 15 homers during those 14 starts, he had never appeared so confused in a major game.
Nola usually relies on terrific fastball movement and a knee-buckling curveball to get batters to chase bad pitches. On Thursday, he nibbled at the edges and missed his spots. The Braves' lineup punished every mistake with surgical precision. Harris had an odd game overall, grounding into two double plays later on, but that first at-bat changed everything. He took a 2-0 pitch from Nola and saw it ricochet off the apex of the 16-foot brick wall before the Chop House. That spot is maybe five feet from where Austin Riley hit his game-winner just two days before.
The Phillies have now seen their streak of five straight postseason appearances end with progressively quicker exits. They lost the NL Championship Series, then two NLDS, and now this wild-card loss. Philadelphia's 2022 World Series defeat by Houston initiated this decline, and Thursday evening validated the pattern. They are stuck in the first round while the Braves are moving on to the big stage. The difference came down to one inning where Nola lost his command and the Braves took advantage.
The Braves didn't let the game get close enough to worry about in the late innings. Left-hander Chris Sale, who started the series opener, came back to close out the win in the ninth. Bryce Harper struck out to end the eighth, after which he retired Bryan De La Cruz and pinch-hitter Otto Kemp to complete the ninth. This was the final nail in the coffin for the Phillies' hopes. Sale's presence on the mound signaled that Atlanta was ready for the next round against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers are the two-time defending World Series champion, and the Braves will play them at Dodger Stadium in a best-of-five Division Series. The series starts soon, but the focus right now is on the fact that Atlanta is still alive. They have beaten a tough Phillies team that had beaten them in recent years. The attendance of 41,731 showed that fans were ready for this moment after the afternoon starts hurt attendance in the first two games. School and work conflicts kept crowds lower on Tuesday and Wednesday, but Thursday night was a sellout.
Grant Holmes succeeded Kerr, permitting one run across two innings while securing the victory. The bullpen did its job, and the offense provided enough runs to keep the pressure off the pitchers. Per the schedule announced after the game, the Braves are set to face Dodger Stadium on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The road to the World Series is long, but the first step is done.
