Michael Hutchinson Hangs Up the Pads After 15 Years of Pro Hockey
Every NHL career has to come to an end eventually, and for one journeyman goaltender who bounced around the league for over a decade, that day has finally arrived. The Winnipeg Jets made the announcement on Monday, and it quickly spread across the hockey world: Michael Hutchinson is officially done.
The 36-year-old netminder from Barrie, Ontario, wraps up a professional career that spanned 15 years, 11 of which were spent in the NHL. He suited up for six different franchises during that time, and while he was never a bonafide starter for any extended stretch, Hutchinson carved out a respectable career as a reliable backup and organizational depth piece.

From Boston 's Draft Pick to Winnipeg Breakout
Hutchinson's NHL journey began when the Boston Bruins selected him 77th overall in the 2008 draft. He spent a few years toiling in Boston's minor league system, splitting time between the AHL and ECHL before the organization let him walk. In the summer of 2013, he signed as a free agent with the Jets, and that's where things really started to click.
Before Connor Hellebuyck had taken over as Winnipeg's franchise goaltender, Hutchinson found himself backing up Ondrej Pavelec . After a brief stint in the minors during 2013-14, he broke through in a big way the following season. His 2014-15 campaign was the best of his career by a wide margin, as he went 21-10-5 in 36 starts while posting a .914 save percentage and a 2.38 goals-against average. That performance was good enough to earn him eighth place in Calder Trophy voting that year.
Over five seasons with the Jets organization, Hutchinson compiled a 43-39-11 record in 102 games with a solid .910 save percentage and 2.65 GAA. It was far and away the most stable chapter of his professional life.

The Nomadic Years and Final Stops
After leaving Winnipeg, Hutchinson entered what you might call the wandering phase of his career. He signed with the Florida Panthers ahead of 2018-19, but it wasn't long before he was on the move again. The Maple Leafs acquired him from Florida in December 2018 in exchange for a fifth-round pick, and Toronto became his second-longest NHL home. Across parts of four seasons with the Leafs, he appeared in 30 games, going 10-15-2 with an .898 save percentage and a 3.18 GAA. He also logged 57 regular season games with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL during that stretch.
Hutchinson even got a taste of playoff hockey along the way. After being traded from Toronto to the Colorado Avalanche for Calle Rosen , he stepped in during the 2019-20 postseason and made four appearances, winning two games with a .910 save percentage. He later re-joined the Leafs as a free agent before eventually moving on to the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings . His final NHL appearance came with Detroit in 2023-24, when he got into just a single game.
His last professional season was spent overseas with SaiPa Lappeenranta in Finland's Liiga, where he appeared in 24 games and posted a 3.02 GAA with an .886 save percentage. He also represented Canada at the Spengler Cup during the 2022-23 season.

All told, Hutchinson's NHL career spanned 154 games with a 57-62-18 record, a .902 save percentage, and a 2.94 GAA. Those numbers won't land him in any hall of fame, but they represent a guy who stuck around the highest level of hockey for over a decade through sheer determination and professionalism. The Jets have already invited him back for an alumni game in October, which feels like a fitting send-off for a goalie who got his best moments in Winnipeg. Best of luck to Hutch in whatever comes next.
