Due to his eccentric, flamboyant character, Dennis Rodman is widely considered one of the most controversial athletes of all time. When he entered the NBA in 1986 with the Detroit Pistons , Worm was a "timid" but hardworking player. Rodman quickly established himself through a tremendous work ethic, thriving on the defensive end due to his intensity and rebounding brilliance.
As soon as he joined the San Antonio Spurs in 1993, Rodman "killed" his former shy persona, with his true character taking over almost immediately. Worm's new, rebellious identity was formed through various hair transformations, tattoos and piercings, as well as a high-profile life and clash with the franchise's authority, Gregg Popovich.
During that time, Rodman's relationship with Madonna further amplified his fame and moved him away from being "just a ball player." But on the court, his famous head butts, erratic behavior and bad boy attitude made him an icon of the entire league.
Overshadowing Michael Jordan himself
However, after being traded to the Chicago Bulls in 1995, his celebrity status exploded to the level fans recognize today.
Once he joined the Michael Jordan-led Bulls, Rodman reached the peak of his fame, both in basketball and pop culture. From the moment he arrived at the United Center, he could seemingly do no wrong. And it all got to the point where he rightfully believed that he was more famous than the man many consider the greatest basketball player ever.
"[Chicago] embraced me after the first couple of months, and then all of a sudden, I'm overshadowing Michael now. I'm more famous than Michael," Rodman said .
"Michael said, 'Oh my God, when I went home for Halloween, my kids were dressed up as Dennis Rodman," he added.
During that time, Chicago loved Rodman's blue-collar work ethic, never-ending energy, and resilience on the hardwood. Off the court, however, the city loved him for his entertaining personality and private life, which was always "not so private" and always shown to the public.
Worm's famous relationships with many icons, including Carmen Electra, made him a constant appearance in the headlines. Dennis' extravagant fashion sense also drew attention from all the cameras, sometimes taking away from MJ's spotlight. Still, in some cases, it came in handy so Jordan could breathe from all of the attention that was on him.
What was different with the Bulls was that they didn't try to tame "The Meanace," but rather accepted him as he is, while still having to manage his antics.
Rodman wasn't a typical athlete
Amid the glamour, Dennis' unconventional appearance for an athlete made him relatable to fans and regular people. His authenticity and unconcerned attitude made him a fan favorite among the Chicago crowd.
However, wherever Dennis played, he was a constant pain and a burden on the organization. Sometimes, his behaviourgot the best out of him and made him a big problem to deal with, including his famous Las Vegas trip in the middle of the NBA Finals.
Still, that was Rodman's way of unwinding, further proving that everyone has their own method of coping with immense pressure.
Nevertheless, Dennis left an impact on the NBA that nobody could have expected, stamping him as one of the most memorable players ever, not just for his game but also for his bravery and authenticity.
