- Michael Rucker Rediscovering Himself with Seattle Mariners
TORONTO -- When you look back at the 2026 Seattle Mariners season, the two innings that reliever Michael Rucker threw in Friday's 8-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays probably won't be remembered.
Rucker gave up two earned runs on three hits, walking one and striking out two.

His ERA for the season is now an unsightly 6.47.
And while that stat line paints an ugly picture, the story is anything but ugly.
A former 11th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs , Rucker made 96 appearances with the Cubs from 2021-23 before spending time with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals organizations. In addition to the roster churns that sent him to those teams, he also missed significant time with Tommy John surgery between 2023 and now.
Again, the end results are what matter most. I know that. But when you think about what Rucker's been through, and what it's taken to get back to the big leagues at the age of 32, he's someone that you can't help but personally root for. He's found a home in Seattle's bullpen, pitching in 29 games.

He's flashed very good stuff at times, with a fastball in the upper-90s and a good slider. He's struck out 38 batters in 32.0 innings. Rucker has served in almost every role you can serve in the bullpen: We've seen him wear it in long relief, contributing to the high ERA, for the sole purpose of saving the leverage arms of the bullpen.
We've seen him throw in the middle innings, and he's even had a few runs in high leverage, with varying degrees of success.
Speaking in the clubhouse before Friday's game, Rucker spoke with MarinersRoundtable. The full interview will be played next Tuesday on the ' Refuse to Lose Territory ' podcast, but here's a portion of what's coming (some of the questions and answers been have edited for length):

Q: Before this season, you hadn't pitched in the big leagues in 2023. First and foremost, what does it mean for you to be back in the big leagues and be back with this team?

A: Yeah, it's something that, as I was going through my TJ rehab after I got it in '24, is something that I knew that I wanted to continue to pursue.
You know, I have a lot to give this game, and every day, to be able to put on a big league uniform is a blessing. Especially to do it for the Mariners, a team that I grew up watching, is really cool.
Q: Did you grow up as a Mariners fan?
A: So, I was born in Mississippi. My first ever big league game I went to was a Braves game at Turner Field. And so, grew up really loving, rooting for those teams. And then, yeah, when we moved up to Washington, just naturally became a Mariners fan. Went to a ton of Mariners games growing up.

And so to be able to see people like Ichiro and Edgar and all those guys, like, it's a really cool, unique experience.
Q:We've seen you in a lot of different roles this year, right? High leverage games, expanded pitch counts to help get the team to the finish line. What does it mean to you to be able to have that versatility to do whatever the team's asking on a specific day?
A: Yeah, I've definitely had to do a little bit of everything. And I think that comes from my background, like coming up through the minors and in college, being a starter, having to give length. The more versatility that I have as a pitcher, the better that serves me and serves the team that I want to be a part of.
I was teammates with Jesse Chavez for a brief moment with the Cubs, and so he's definitely the epitome of a Swiss Army knife type guy. And so, that's something that I can be. I think that's only an asset.

Q:We've seen you up to 97 mph, and we've seen the good slider. How do you feel about your stuff in general right now?
A: I feel like it's really been the best raw stuff that I've ever had. And, you know, it's just credit to really spending all of last year, 2025, just trying to rediscover who Michael Rucker is after surgery and find a couple of different little pieces that were missing.
And to be and feel 100 percent, who knows how long I'd been pitching with a compromised elbow prior to my surgery. But I feel excited for the type of stuff that's coming out of my hand, and so I'm just surely just excited to get back out there.
