Michelle Gisin, who won the final two Olympic gold medals in Alpine skiing's individual combined event in 2018 and 2022, announced her retirement at age 32.
Gisin missed the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics after tearing knee ligaments and sustaining injuries to her spine and wrist in a downhill training crash last December.
Deciding to retire "was a long process that took place alongside my rehabilitation, but also in the years leading up to it," she said, according to a translation of a Swiss Ski Team press release . "When I returned to St. Moritz in September, I felt a great deal of gratitude — for my health, but above all for all the wonderful moments I've been fortunate enough to experience throughout my long career. ... It took a little while for my mind to catch up with my heart. But now I'm very happy and looking forward to everything the future holds for me."
Gisin leaves ski racing as the last woman to win Olympic gold in the individual combined event, which was replaced on the program after 2022 with a team combined event.
She also took super-G bronze in 2022, plus world championships medals in the combined in 2017 (silver) and 2021 (bronze). She won one individual World Cup race -- a slalom in 2020 -- among 21 individual World Cup podiums.
Her first Olympic gold in 2018 came four years after older sister Dominique shared downhill gold with Slovenian Tina Maze.
"It was a wonderful time – and I truly appreciate that I was able to enjoy it so much," Michelle Gisin said, according to the release. "Now I'm incredibly excited to finally be able to do what I've missed all these years: ski, on the slopes of my own choosing."
