Continuity is the ultimate currency for an offensive line coach. When five players move as one, cohesive blocks are sustained, execution becomes seamless, and the entire offense operates with rhythm.
For Michigan offensive line coach Jim Harding , finding that ideal dynamic has been a constant puzzle through the first month of the season.
A wave of injuries and shuffling personnel has forced Michigan to constantly rework its starting five. Heading into Saturday's matchup against Minnesota, the Wolverines are searching for stability while demanding immediate improvements across the board.
"Frankly, nobody cares," Harding said when addressing the unit's injury situation. "There's injuries all across the country, and so we've got to do a better job. I think our pass protection so far has been really good, but we can be more consistent in the run game and get more push."
While the pass protection has stood tall, the run game remains a work in progress. Harding noted that the line showed a better surge at the line of scrimmage last week against Iowa, but the overall product is still far from the program standard.
"Truthfully, it's not where I want it to be and where I think it can be, and that falls on me ultimately," Harding said. "As frustrated as maybe some people are, there's not anyone more frustrated because I believe that how the offense plays is a direct reflection of the offensive line. If we play well, everybody else is going to play well."
Eliminating Self-Inflicted Errors
Part of Michigan's focus this week in practice has centered around cleaning up self-inflicted mistakes. Penalties have stalled drives and erased explosive plays in critical moments, prompting Harding to institute immediate, physical accountability during padded practices.
If a lineman picks up a penalty during practice reps, the entire unit feels it.
"If we had a holding call, we would do down-ups, 10 for every holding call there was, just to try to make that a point of emphasis," Harding explained. "We have officials at practice and we're asking them to be very aggressive. If we just sit here and say, 'oh, everything will be okay,' it's going to happen again. So we, as coaches, have to do something to address it."
Harding highlighted specific holding infractions where linemen need to display better awareness, particularly when the ball carrier changes direction or breaks outside the pocket.
"When the ball carrier breaks contain, you've got to let him go," Harding said. "You don't have eyes in the back of your head, but you've got to feel it because they're calling it that tightly. You're hurting the team trying to finish the block when he's pulling away versus just living with the end result."
The True Freshman Factor
With injuries creating opportunities down the depth chart, true freshman Marky Walbridge has stepped directly into the spotlight. A midyear enrollee who arrived in Ann Arbor in January, Marky has quickly elevated himself into a crucial role upfront.
When Blake Frazier went down in Michigan's last contest, Marky stepped in without hesitation.
"He's done a really nice job considering he's a true freshman," Harding said. "He's going to continue to get bigger and stronger, but he's incredibly athletic and physical. I thought he did some nice things in the run game when he stepped in."
Marky's early arrival in January gave him a full spring practice schedule and an extra strength training cycle, giving him a distinct advantage in his development curve.
"There are certainly advantages to being a midyear, especially here at Michigan," Harding noted. "He's somebody at practice right now that plays right and left, so he's kind of the swing guy right now. I do have confidence in him that if we have to get to that point, he'll go in and battle and we'll be okay."
Trusting the Process
As Michigan prepares for a physical Minnesota front led by long defensive end Anthony Smith, Harding is preaching simple execution. Rather than overthinking scheme adjustments or searching for perfection, the message to his group is simple: play fast and play physical.
"These kids are some of the brightest minds in the world, literally," Harding said. "Sometimes you just have to say, 'quit thinking and just play.' You don't need to be perfect, just play hard, and playing hard will cover up a mistake here or there."
The line has started the same five players for two straight weeks, allowing chemistry to build steadily. As Michigan approaches its upcoming bye week, Harding expects that foundation to pay dividends on Saturday.
