The Michigan Wolverines were thrown for a loop when head coach Dusty May opted to leave the program for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. May was coming off the program's first NCAA championship since 1989. Michigan initially tapped assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr. as interim head coach , while they conducted a search. And now, the program made the decision to make Boynton the full-time coach on a two-year contract, as per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Mike Boynton was originally hired as an assistant coach when Dusty May took over the Michigan program ahead of the 2024-25 season. He was the team's defensive coordinator, and this past season the Wolverines were 13th in the nation in defensive rating.
This will be Boynton's second opportunity at being a Division 1 head coach. His previous stint was at the helm of the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 2017-2024 where he complied an overall record of 119-109. His tenure included one NCAA Tournament appearance and two NIT quarterfinal appearances.

Prior to that, Boynton was a longtime college basketball assistant coach beginning with Furman as a graduate assistant in 2004. He also had stops with Coastal Carolina, Wofford, South Carolina and Stephen F. Austin. Boynton played his college basketball career at South Carolina from 2000-2004 before immediately going into coaching following the end of his eligibility.
Despite the departure of May, the Wolverines managed to keep together the bulk of their projected returning roster, as well as their incoming freshman class. Michigan is expected to still be among the nation's elite for the upcoming season.
