Michigan State's newest starting center is a man who transferred into the Big Ten from North Dakota State University and goes by the name of Trent Fraley.
As the son of Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley, it is no surprise that Trent is following in his father's footsteps in a profound way.

Fraley comes to East Lansing with an impressive résumé already under his belt. The 2025 Rimington Award winner, Fraley was recognized as one of the top centers across the FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels.
Last season, Fraley took home the award as the FCS' top center, using his success at North Dakota State as a springboard to the Big Ten . Now, he has the opportunity to immediately step into a starting role and help guide Michigan State through a pivotal season.
That may be old news for some Spartan fans, but for others, it serves as a refresher or even a crash course on one of Michigan State's most important newcomers.
But Fraley's accomplishments extend far beyond the football field.

This week, Fraley was named to the watch list for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
Often referred to as the "Academic Heisman," the William V. Campbell Trophy is awarded to the college football player who demonstrates the best combination of academic success, leadership and on-field performance.
It is a prestigious honor that showcases not only how impactful Fraley could potentially be for Michigan State on the field, but also the type of student and leader he is away from it.
That aspect of college athletics can sometimes get overlooked.
Only a small percentage of Division I college football players ever make it to the NFL, and even for those fortunate enough to reach the professional level, the average career is relatively short. Preparing for life beyond football is something every student-athlete must consider.

For Fraley, his commitment in the classroom appears to be just as important as his dominance on the football field.
When the pads come on, Fraley is the type of player who wants to maul anything in his vicinity. But away from the gridiron, he is clearly putting in the same level of effort toward preparing for whatever comes next after football.
That leadership has already been recognized inside the Michigan State locker room.
Fraley was named one of the team's six captains and is one of just two offensive players selected, alongside quarterback Alessio Milivojevic.
That is an impressive honor for a player who has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game for the Spartans.

Head coach Pat Fitzgerald has repeatedly emphasized the importance of winning in the trenches. Since taking over, Fitzgerald and his staff have made improving the offensive line a clear priority, spending ample time in the transfer portal searching for players capable of making an immediate impact.
Landing Fraley appears to be one of the biggest moves in that effort.
Michigan State has high expectations for its new starting center on the field, especially as the Spartans look to establish a stronger identity in the trenches. But Fraley's recognition on the William V. Campbell Trophy watch list proves that the expectations surrounding him extend far beyond Saturdays.
The Spartans may have landed a player capable of anchoring their offensive line, but they also appear to have landed a leader who understands the importance of succeeding in every aspect of being a student-athlete.
For Fraley, the expectations are high on the field in East Lansing.
They may be even higher in the classroom.
