Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph says the Tigers' offense will not skip a beat despite a late coaching change just weeks before the start of preseason camp. The news broke Tuesday when Ruston Daily Leader sports editor Matt Belinson reported that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shyrone Carey was no longer with the program.
"NEW: Grambling State Offensive Coordinator/QB coach Shyrone Carey is no longer on staff. Big shakeup for the Tigers, who report to camp July 29. On March 18, Mickey Joseph said, 'Shyrone Carey will take over the play calling.' Now, the OC turnstile continues for GSU. #GramFam"
The timing of Carey's departure came as a surprise, with SWAC Media Day taking place Wednesday and Grambling preparing to open preseason camp later this month.

Joseph addressed the move during SWAC Media Day media call, explaining that Carey's decision was driven by personal priorities.
"He chose family and I wish I chose family in my younger career," Joseph said. "The playbook doesn't change. They didn't know who was calling the plays for us last year and they won't know who's calling them this year."
Carey shared play-calling duties with Joseph in the 2026 season after Eric Dooley served as the Tigers' offensive coordinator during the 2025 campaign. Carey was set to fully assume the offensive coordinator role before his departure, heading into the Fall.
Joseph also revealed that the program has already begun its search for Carey's replacement and confirmed that one of the candidates is among the most accomplished quarterbacks in Grambling history: Bruce Eugene, who currently serves as a scouting assistant on Syracuse University's staff.
"He's one of the people we're talking to; we have three or four people we're talking to," Joseph said. "We'll have this thing cleared up by next week for sure."
Eugene is widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Grambling history. From 2001 to 2005, he was a two-time SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, earned First Team All-SWAC honors twice and guided the Tigers to two SWAC championships.
During his collegiate career, Eugene also established several FCS records, including career touchdown passes, total touchdowns responsible for, and career points responsible for.
