The NBA's 2025-26 midseason trade window has opened with a major move, as Trae Young has been traded to the Washington Wizards after spending seasons with the Atlanta Hawks — a tenure that included four All-Star selections. While the move has generated significant buzz, many remain unconvinced about whether the Wizards represent the right basketball fit for Young at this stage of his career.
Adding to that discussion, star sports agent Rich Paul recently explained why he always viewed the Toronto Raptors as the best fit for Ice Trae, in terms of the latter's image and basketball perception.
Paul explains why the Raptors were the best fit for Young
One of the most defining aspects of Trae's persona has always been his confidence, flair, and attitude, including his most notable Ice Trae celebration, where he rubs his palms on his shoulders to show his calm, cold-blooded approach in clutch moments.
According to RP, that identity would have resonated perfectly in a city like Toronto, where the symbolism of "ice" would have naturally aligned with the environment and culture. Paul believes Young's nickname and on-court swagger would have been embraced much more passionately by the Raptors fanbase than they were by the Hawks' fans.
Beyond branding, Paul also highlighted the basketball fit. Young's playmaking ability, combined with his lethal three-point shooting, makes him a natural offensive weapon who would have paired well with multiple players in the Raptors franchise. In comparison to Young, more often than not, he carried Atlanta on his back season after season.
"In this case, what I foresaw back then was Toronto," Paul said on his podcast. " And the reason why I foresaw Toronto is because I'm looking at that holistically — basketball — wise. I thought about Ice Trae, it's ice cold up there, the kids, the style of play… because Might Mouse 2.0, I think about things that when you go into an organization and you have these conversations with them, because what people don't understand is there's a basketball side of an orgnization but there's also a business side of an organization."
Young would still make sense for the Raptors
As things stand, Young now finds himself in Washington, a situation that may not represent his ideal or final destination either. From a competitive standpoint, the Wizards have missed the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, raising questions about how this move aligns with Trae's ambitions as a perennial All-Star who aspires to compete for championships.
While some would argue that Washington offers him a fresh start and a clear leadership role, the broader trajectory of the franchise remains uncertain. On the other hand, from Toronto's perspective, acquiring Young could have provided the team with an experienced, elite-level point guard capable of orchestrating a deep playoff run.
Lastly, with players like Brandon Ingram , Scottie Barnes , and RJ Barrett performing at a high level and remaining consistently available, Young's presence could have significantly elevated the team's offensive ceiling. Nonetheless, it's now all about Trae trying to make a new home for himself, and it's surely not in Atlanta.
