Last season's momentum has not been maintained by the New York Knicks as they move forward. Mike Brown, the head coach, stated the squad must restart from base camp to forge championship chemistry. The defending champions have stumbled to a 3-4 record through the first seven games of the 2026-27 campaign. Brown informed reporters that chemistry cannot be stored in a locker for future use. He compared the current season to a grueling mountain hike where skipping steps leads to disaster, according to Yahoo Sports . The core group of players knows each other well, yet the offense still looks disjointed and slow to find its rhythm.
The coach stressed that the group must proceed correctly at every step while rebuilding their identity. Mikal Bridges agreed, noting the team requires time to regain sync following the June break. The gap between the end of last season and now has cost the team its flow and sharpness. Bridges observed that the performance decline mirrors the adjustment period needed for the new year. Brown feels the squad must create high-quality three-point looks to clear the paint for big men. Missing those shots requires better movement and play elsewhere to prevent defensive traps.

Bridges Struggles in a Deep Slump
Mikal Bridges has faced significant challenges in his scoring ability during the early part of the season. Over seven games, Bridges averages 6.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists on 30.8 percent shooting. These numbers represent a steep drop from last season when he averaged 14.4 points and shot 49 percent from the floor. Bridges has reached double figures in scoring just twice in seven appearances this year, with a season-high of 12 points against both Detroit and Philadelphia.
Brown remains calm regarding a key contributor to last season's Knicks title push who is struggling. He insists that Bridges must find a way to stay productive even when his shots are not falling.
The coach has reduced Bridges' playing time in recent games as he tries to ride the hot hands of other players. In the win over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday, Bridges played just 16 minutes and scored only six points on 1-of-7 shooting. He went scoreless on two three-point attempts, ending with two rebounds and zero assists. Brown noted that strong reserve play led to Bridges spending significant time on the bench. Landry Shamet scored a game-high 22 points off the bench, and Jordan Clarkson added seven points in 11 minutes to help New York outscore Brooklyn in the fourth quarter.

The coach thinks Bridges can exit the slump by focusing on game aspects independent of shooting. He told reporters that during a funk, one must find one or two things to hold their hat on. Mikal ranks among the NBA's best runners in both offensive and defensive directions. Therefore, he must lean on that running, along with cutting, rebounding, and driving. Brown stated that his shot will come eventually if he keeps doing those other things that help the team win.
The Mountain Analogy for Team Chemistry
He told the media the team is ascending a mountain, restarting again from base camp. Chemistry is not something you can keep in a locker; it needs constant work like a campfire that requires tending. Last season ended with machine-like rhythm for the Knicks, yet that ensures no new-year success. Brown warned that skipping steps during this climb leads to death. At 3-4 after seven games, the team holds a heavy record that does not signal a lost season.
Brown told the group to take each step correctly and to work on rebuilding connections. Mikal Bridges confessed the team needs time to regain rhythm since their last June game. He pointed out that they were at their most polished then, and the long break has hurt their flow. Bridges stated the performance drop reflects the time required to adjust to the current season. Brown also applied a football analogy to reporters to explain their shooting difficulties.

He said that shooting from the perimeter is like football, where you cannot pass the ball.
When defenses collapse inside, finishing at the rim becomes far harder for big men. The Knicks must hit some green threes to open the floor for effective big-man operation. Brown said the team must generate quality three-point shots while improving elsewhere to fix the offense. Failing to make those shots demands compensation via better play elsewhere to avoid getting stuck. Turnovers and isolation plays have hurt the offense's flow and efficiency significantly. This disjointed approach differs greatly from the selfless team that won fans nationwide last year.
Clarifying the Backup Point Guard Roles
Coach Mike Brown clarified that Jose Alvarado stays the backup point guard, though Tyler Kolek impressed. With Alvarado out four games due to a left ankle sprain, Kolek seized the chance to prove himself. Kolek tallied 25 assists with only two turnovers across 57 minutes backing up Brunson. He averaged 15.8 assists per 36 minutes, featuring a behind-the-back pass to Karl-Anthony Towns for a dunk. The second-year guard's rise questions how Brown will split minutes now that Alvarado is back.

Brown disclosed he spoke directly with both guards to explain his decision on the situation. He told them that neither player's role is guaranteed indefinitely despite Alvarado's return. The reality is Jose got hurt and Tyler provided good minutes, but I sat them both down. I told them Jose is the backup, as he finished the season in that role, yet both helped us win last year. Jose in the Finals and Tyler in the Cup Finals, Brown said prior to Monday's game against the Brooklyn Nets. He emphasized both can contribute highly, meaning both guys must stay ready.
Brown stressed that injury alone should not cause a player to lose their position. He noted change might last a half or five games; who knows? The main goal is not giving up a guy's spot when he is injured, as best I can. Entering Monday, Alvarado had played just two games, averaging 5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 13.5 minutes. He returned Monday for eight minutes in the first half, recording a block and missing his only shot.
Kolek Embraces the Trust of the Coach
Knicks' Tyler Kolek loves the trust Mike Brown places in him during this early season stretch. Kolek played five minutes scoring two points while Alvarado played nine minutes with a block against the Nets. Kolek's minutes came in the fourth quarter, which showed Brown's trust in him to handle the ball in a tight game. Kolek said in the locker room after the game that it shows Brown's confidence in him. He added that the coach trusts every roster member and will insert anyone to spark the team.

Kolek ran the offense while Alvarado was absent. His offensive organization gave Jalen Brunson valuable relief during the team's early struggles. Despite inconsistent shooting, Kolek showed passing instincts making him an intriguing rotation prospect. He recorded 21 assists with zero turnovers across his first three rotation appearances. Recent performances strengthen his case for a larger role on a Knicks team struggling with turnovers early.
Kolek provides playmaking and organization, and Alvarado provides defensive pressure. Alvarado thrives by pressuring ballhandlers and disrupting opponents' rhythm with his relentless defense. Brown said last week Tyler will keep playing while Jose is out. With Alvarado back, Brown must adjust the rotation to maintain balance.
Shooting Woes and the Need for Spacing
Lack of outside shooting hurts the Knicks inside as defenses collapse to stop big men. Reporters were told by Brown that a football analogy helped clarify the difficulties with perimeter shooting. He said if you are shooting poorly at the perimeter, it is like football where you cannot pass. If you cannot pass, they put eight guys in the box to stop the run. Defensive collapses in the paint make finishing at the rim much harder for Knicks interior players.

To fix the offense, Brown stated that the team must improve in other areas while generating high-quality three-point shots. To avoid being trapped, they must make up for missed shots by playing better in other areas. Too many turnovers and isolation plays that hurt their flow and efficiency have plagued the offense. Last year, a selfless team won fans across the country, a stark contrast to this disjointed style.
The coaching staff knows the fix requires better spacing and ball movement rather than merely hoping for improved shooting. The spark the offense needs to get back on track could be provided by a shift in the backcourt. After sitting out four games due to an ankle sprain, Jose Alvarado is questionable for Monday's game against the Nets. He practiced Sunday, boosting the team as they seek improved consistency. In his absence, Tyler Kolek stepped up to play 57 minutes across four games, recording 25 assists and just two turnovers.
Brown's Message on Rotation Flexibility
Mike Brown sat down with Jose Alvarado and Tyler Kolek to discuss playing time. He stated that both players helped secure last year's victory and possess the ability to perform and contribute at a high level. Since a change can happen at any time, both guys got to be ready. Brown's reasoning reflects a principle where players should not automatically lose rotation spots due to injuries. Depending on how the team performs, he noted that the alteration might endure for just one half or extend across multiple games.

While acknowledging that both players contributed to New York's championship success last season, Brown noted they did so under different circumstances. While explaining the value of both guards, Brown noted that Jose reached the finals and Tyler played in the Cup final. Given the team's needs, the coach emphasized that neither player should consider the current rotation to be permanent. This message ensures that both players remain engaged and ready to contribute whenever called upon.
As the Knicks seek to recover from an inconsistent season start, Alvarado's return provides Brown with an additional defensive choice. His aggressive defense, experience, and willingness to challenge opposing guards could help the team regain its identity. The defending NBA champions have begun with a 3-4 record, a run that included a defeat by the Philadelphia 76ers. Alvarado's return could help address that problem by adding a different defensive presence behind Jalen Brunson.
