Mike Locksley's first Saturday as a television analyst will involve previewing the Maryland football program that fired him 17 days earlier.
According to Sports Business Journal , Locksley is joining Big Ten Network as a studio analyst for the remainder of the regular season, lending the conference's in-house network an authoritative voice for its November stretch run. He makes his debut Friday on The B1G Show before shifting to the network's Saturday slate, which includes B1G Countdown to Kickoff as a lead-in to Maryland's meeting with Purdue.
Locksley is slated to work weekends through the Dec. 5 Big Ten Championship Game, and SBJ's Matt Fortuna reports he could also surface during the network's College Football Playoff coverage.
Maryland cut ties with him on Oct. 21, the day after a home loss to Rutgers dropped the Terrapins to 2-5, and Locksley told ESPN's Heather Dinich he intended to pursue television work in the interim, possibly at BTN, largely to gauge whether he enjoyed it.
Locksley compiled a 38-49 record across eight seasons in College Park, delivering three consecutive bowl berths and back-to-back-to-back eight-win campaigns from 2021 through 2023, though those highlights were offset by four losing seasons and a dismal 16-47 mark in Big Ten play.
Broadcasting doesn't appear to be his ultimate destination. Locksley conceded to Dinich that he likely won't lead a program again and indicated he's contemplating assistant jobs in the NFL or at another premier college outfit. In any event, BTN's studio has increasingly become a refuge for coaches between jobs, as the network also welcomed former Michigan interim coach Biff Poggi this fall.
