After a rough start to the football season, many in the HBCU football world questioned Mississippi Valley State's viability as an FCS program. Since then, the Delta Devils have won two straight games, including a resounding comeback win over SWAC champion Prairie View A&M Panthers last week. This week, they faced Prairie View's rival, Texas Southern University. Once again, Mississippi Valley State, led by head coach Charrell Buckley, had to fight back after falling behind by double digits.
After a back-and-forth start, Texas Southern kicked a field goal, courtesy of Miguel Arana III, to take a 24-14 lead. Late in the third quarter, Althean Renfro finished a seven-play, 38-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown. That put Texas Southern up 31-14, but in the fourth quarter, Mississippi Valley State put together a 24-point drive that ultimately powered them to a 38-34 victory.
