According to a new survey, MLB insiders believe the Red Sox will miss Alex Bregman both on the field and in the clubhouse.
The Athletic's Jayson Stark asked 36 execs, managers, coaches, and scouts who "the most irreplaceable subtraction any team endured" would be this offseason. Bregman led the field with 11 votes, edging fellow All-Stars Pete Alonso (10) and Kyle Tucker (6).
"(Bregman is) more than just a baseball player. He's the most magnetic personality in every clubhouse he enters," Stark writes. "So you can replace his at-bats. You can stick someone else at third base. You can divvy up his money. But, as our voters clearly conveyed, when it comes to all the other stuff, you can't replace that."
One of the voters added that Bregman's departure could also have a ripple effect within the Red Sox clubhouse.
"I think losing him hurts the core young guys in Boston ," a voter told Stark.
Bregman ultimately signed a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs which included a no-trade clause. That was a sticking point in negotiations in Boston, as the Red Sox refused to offer him no-trade protection, citing organizational policy. Asked about that at JetBlue Park this week, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy made some headlines.
"Look, if Alex Bregman wanted to be here, ultimately he'd be here," Kennedy said.
Bregman responded to Kennedy's comments in a conversation with USA Today that ran Friday morning.
"It was more than just that (no-trade clause)," Bregman said. "...I just really don't want to get into it. It's not worth it."
