Though the Red Sox didn’t make any blockbuster moves this winter, a group of MLB insiders believe their roster is still significantly upgraded.
The Red Sox added Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray to the starting rotation, while bolstering the lineup with Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin . However, they lost Alex Bregman , who was an All-Star third baseman last season.
Ultimately, the insiders surveyed by The Athletic’s Jayson Stark believe it was a quality offseason for Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow . In a survey of 36 execs, managers, coaches and scouts, the Red Sox were voted the second most improved roster in the American League. Only the Baltimore Orioles garnered more support.
“Over and over, I heard from these voters how much the Sox will miss Bregman,” Stark writes. “But since our panel apparently appreciates a flurry of low-pizzazz moves, the Sox still got a ton of Most Improved votes. So can they sell depth and flexibility (as opposed to star power) to a fan base coughing up $700 for two box seats?”
A National League executive emphasized that lack of sizzle in his response.
“I put them on my (most improved) list,” the exec told Stark. “But nothing they’ve done, for me, is really sexy.”
Interestingly, Stark added that the Red Sox were one of only three teams in the survey that didn’t garner a single vote in the least improved category, along with the Orioles and Tigers.
