The MLS transfer market is hotter than ever. Hardly a day goes by without a new rumor or a confirmed move involving one of the league's clubs.
Recently, we reported on the Columbus Crew signing Eric Bailly , the former Manchester United defender and FIFA 17 fan favorite.
However, this time we're here to confirm the transfer of the current MLS Golden Boot leader to Monterrey in Mexico .
That's right, the Chicago Fire are losing a crucial player, the man largely responsible for keeping the club near the top of the standings.
Before discussing the Fire's sale, it's important to note that this departure was prompted by Robert Lewandowski's recent arrival.
Based on what the Polish striker showed at FC Barcelona last season, he is still playing at an extraordinary level for his age.
As a result, Cuypers likely would not have received enough minutes to fully showcase his goal-scoring ability, as he did during the first half of the regular season.
Now, yes, we can talk about this deal.
According to Tom Bogert , the Mexican club will pay $7.5 million plus bonuses for the Belgian striker's transfer.
In retrospect, this would have been a huge blow for the Chicago Fire had they not signed Robert Lewandowski just a few weeks ago.
Before announcing his departure, and following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, the MLS Golden Boot leader had this to say about handing the No. 9 shirt to the former Bayern Munich striker:
"Robert is one of the greatest No. 9's ever, and it wouldn't look right if he was playing with another number. It was an easy decision for me to give it to him, and I really hope we can achieve a lot of things together on the pitch."
Also, some sources reported that several MLS clubs were interested in signing Hugo Cuypers, with St. Louis City SC being one of them. However, Monterrey was the one who could close a deal.
