Happy Monday Dawg fans, and welcome to today's Dots.
Saturday's win at Nebraska will be remembered as one of the most remarkable of Jedd Fisch's tenure, as the Huskies pulled out a near-impossible win inside the last two minutes against the Cornhuskers, 17-10.
Jedd got to have his QB cake and eat it too on Saturday, and his smile after the game said it all: Elijah Brown got the start, placating 95% of the Husky fanbase, while Demond Williams, Jr was unleashed in the 4th quarter to perform his high-wire magic act and deliver a conference victory on the road, at night, against a Husker team that recently had both Indiana and Oregon on the ropes.
Demond's insertion in the 4th quarter was indeed the "spark" Jedd said the team needed — and diverging stories would be written in re Demond's play, depending on whether the arrow pointed to a "W" or an "L" at 00:00.
A non-existent ground game (Brian Bonner, Trey Cooley, and Jayden Limar(!) carried 11 times for just 29 yards), and a short passing game from Brown meant that punter Hunter Green saw a lot of action… and let's take a moment to recognize how great Green was: 8 punts, 48.9 yd avg., 5 kicks inside the 20, and a long of 63 yds. Sure, no team wants to punt 8 times, but Hunter Green was as important to this win as was Chris Lawson, IMO.
And Lawson was magnificent himself: 12 catches, 155 yds, and the offense's only TD on the night, putting UW ahead for good with 1:30 left in the game. Not to mention the falling, sideline catch on 4th-and-18 that set up his sensational touchdown.
The Husky defense thwarted runs between the tackles, held all rushers to a 4.6 yd average, and allowed just one TD and one FG. Cornhusker dual-threat QB Anthony Colandrea ran for only 20 yds on 7 carries, wasn't especially accurate, and looked nervous and indecisive throughout the game. He was picked off three times by Husky DBs, with Alex McLaughlin's pick-six proving the winning margin.
Now we have a familiar question but under very different circumstances: Which QB starts against Penn State this Saturday at Husky Stadium?
