The 2024-25 season was a good one on the books for Liverpool FC, according to a new report from The Athletic.
Liverpool is owned by Fenway Sports Group, led by Red Sox principal owner John Henry, and Chris Weatherspoon reports the English Premier League team set a club revenue record of £702.7 million in 2024-25. That translates to roughly $931 million in USD. Liverpool was reportedly profitable for the first time since 2021-22, taking home £15.2million ($20.1 million USD).
Weatherspoon also provided an interesting tidbit on where some of the money being spent is coming from.
"After seven straight years of no or negative owner funding, 2024-25 was the second season running in which FSG provided cash. The amount put in last season — £19.2million — was significantly lower than the previous year's £127.3m, but people with knowledge of the matter, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, have confirmed to The Athletic that it came from the same source," Weatherspoon writes. "Dynasty Equity bought a small stake in FSG in September 2023, resulting in that £127m flowing to Liverpool, and it was from Dynasty that last year's investment came too."
It was a great year on the pitch for Liverpool too, as they won the Premier League championship.
As for the Red Sox, their luxury tax payroll is currently at $264 million, per FanGraphs. That ranks seventh among all Major League Baseball teams. The Red Sox don't disclose financial information regarding revenue and profit, but CEO Sam Kennedy defended the team's willingness to spend at spring training last month.
"You can go do the math and know where we are," Kennedy said. "I think it just shows that John (Henry) and Linda (Pizzuti) and Tom (Werner) and Mike Gordon in ownership are continuing to put the resources necessary into the Boston Red Sox to be successful. Now, we've got to go out and do it."
Henry hasn't held a press conference with Red Sox reporters since 2020.
