The NBA has confirmed Scott Foster as crew chief for Game 5 of the Finals, giving Knicks and Spurs fans another major subplot before tipoff.
New York leads 3-1 and can clinch its first championship since 1973 in San Antonio .
That makes the whistle part of the story, especially with Foster attached to a potential closeout game.
The NBA Official page lists Foster as crew chief, James Capers as referee, Tyler Ford as umpire and Mitchell Ervin as alternate for New York at San Antonio.
John Goble is listed for the replay center, giving the league an experienced group for a game that could end the series.
Foster is the headline name because his record is enormous, and his reputation is louder than most officials. The NBRA lists him in his 32nd NBA season, with 1,867 regular-season games, 263 playoff games, and 26 Finals games before this assignment.

Capers is nearly as seasoned, listed in his 31st season with 1,634 regular-season games, 204 playoff games, and 17 Finals games. Ford is in his 11th season with 593 regular-season games, 51 playoff games, and one Finals game, while Ervin is also in his 11th season with 557 regular-season games and 24 playoff games.
Foster's wider postseason profile is why this assignment will get attention. Entering the Finals, San Antonio reporting had him at 11 games in the 2026 playoffs, with home teams winning nine of them, and his crew averaging 46.1 fouls.
That does not prove a Game 5 direction. It explains why both fanbases will study every early whistle.
The latest verified playoff elimination game Foster worked was the Lakers at the Rockets Game 6 on May 1, 2026. Houston was trying to extend the first-round series, but Los Angeles won 98-78 and ended the Rockets' season.
The latest verified Finals elimination game Foster worked was the Celtics at Mavericks Game 4 on June 14, 2024. Boston had a chance to sweep, but Dallas won 122-84 to force Game 5.
That history will feed the familiar Foster conversation, but the bigger truth is simpler. The Knicks have a title chance, the Spurs have one more home stand, and the NBA has placed its most experienced active referee at the center of it.
