- NBA Draft: Detroit Pistons Added Elite Self-Creation With Ebuka Okorie Selection
Last night, the Detroit Pistons made a big move in the middle of the 2026 NBA Draft to snag a prospect that they had earmarked as a difference maker. Though the Pistons entered the night with the 21st overall selection in round one, Detroit opted to deal that pick along with a trio of future second-rounders to the Memphis Grizzlies for the right to take Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie with their lone draft choice this year.
Now, the Okorie selection might be a head-scratcher for some that view the freshman as a small, scoring-first point guard a la Marcus Sasser , but that would drastically sell the newest Piston short. Last season, Okorie played on a Stanford squad that struggled, so the freshman ball handler increased his responsibility in a commensurate fashion and shifted to a more dominant scoring role en route to his AP All-America Honorable Mention selection.

During the 2025-26 ACC campaign, Okorie posted over 23 points per game while cleverly unveiling just how deep his bag is at the point of attack. Unlike Sasser, Okorie graded out as one of college basketball's elite downhill scorers as a Cardinal with a 81% FGM rate on unassisted buckets, which underscores just how dangerous the newest Pistons is with the rock. During the playoffs, Detroit ran into an issue due to their lack of self-creators on offense outside of Cade Cunningham , and Okorie looks like a prospect who was selected to fill that role immediately from day one.
From a shooting perspective, Okorie might not jump off the page with his three-point percentage sitting in sub-36 territory, but that's more indicative of the situation that he was placed in while at Stanford. Okorie approached each game knowing that he'd have to shoulder the scoring load, and that caveat influenced the speedy, shifty guard to take more shots from beyond the arc. Since Detroit heavily scouted Okorie prior to the draft , the Pistons are more than familiar with what the Stanford product offers.
But given Okorie's 83.2% mark from the charity stripe, there is legitimate reason to believe that he could improve his accuracy from downtown since he has the mechanics and rhythm to knock down shots from all over the court. And while that's true, Okorie's finishing ability around the rim and through contact is one of the more notable aspects to his game at this stage. Because Okorie has the skill set to break down his defender off the bounce, look for the rookie to fit right in with Detroit's emphasis on scoring in the paint, but he should be able to contribute from long-range as well.
In terms of the Pistons' depth chart, last year's top seed in the East will be entering the upcoming season with six guards on the roster. Obviously, Cunningham has the starting point guard spot locked up, but Detroit also has Okorie, Sasser, Daniss Jenkins , Caris LeVert and Chaz Lanier in the backcourt. Now, Lanier barely had an opportunity to showcase his talent last season, and Sasser experienced turbulent playing time that cratered towards the postseason once Jenkins established himself as a competent scoring option who can also initiate offense in the half-court. Given that reality, Okorie could have a golden opportunity to usurp both Lanier and Sasser on the depth chart if he has a strong training camp and Summer League performance.

Entering the draft, the Pistons had three clear-cut needs: perimeter shooting, a long-term answer at power forward and a ball handler who can self-create when asked to. Okorie checks that final box with flying colors, and he may develop into one of the team's stronger options from three-point range before too long.
