The race for Giannis Antetokounmpo appears to be tightening by the day. With the New York Knicks now crowned champions, attention across the league has shifted toward what could become the defining transaction of the offseason. Sure, the Miami Heat have long been viewed as the most logical landing spot for the two-time MVP. However, veteran NBA insider Marc Stein has become the latest prominent voice to identify the Boston Celtics as a legitimate threat to derail Miami's pursuit.
In his latest report , Stein described a league divided on where Giannis ultimately lands. Some executives continue to view Miami as the frontrunner thanks to a clear trade framework centered around Tyler Herro , Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr , and additional draft compensation.
However, Stein noted a growing belief around the league that Boston has emerged as the most serious alternative. There's speculation that Antetokounmpo could be open to a long-term future in green. The challenge for Celtics president Brad Stevens lies in constructing a package substantial enough to satisfy Milwaukee . League chatter continues to center on Jaylen Brown as the necessary salary anchor. With the June 23 NBA Draft rapidly approaching, the pressure on all parties is mounting.
The Giannis sweepstakes have become the league's dominant storyline entering the 2026 offseason. Milwaukee is reportedly seeking clarity before draft night. The Heat possess perhaps the most straightforward offer on the table. Still, Boston's ability to offer a championship-ready environment has positioned the Celtics as a genuine contender. As draft week approaches, what once felt like a Miami coronation is increasingly shaping up as a two-team showdown.
