Baylor Bears quarterback DJ Lagway got off to a poor start in the season opener against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday. The quarterback committed two turnovers in the first quarter.
Just moments after turning over the ball via a fumble, Lagway threw an interception in Auburn territory. Facing a third-and-11, Lagway tried a short pass, which got intercepted.
Fans were upset with the play from Lagway:
"DJ Lagway needs to be benched," one fan suggested.
"The best thing DJ Lagway did was get out of the SEC," one fan wrote.
"DJ Lagway has made a couple pure NFL throws and had 2 of the worst turnovers you've ever seen 5 minutes into his Baylor career, this is special," another reacted.
Neither team scored a touchdown in the first quarter. Auburn got on the board thanks to Alex McPherson's 43-yard field goal.
DJ Lagway entered the transfer portal after the 2025 season with the Florida Gators. In his sophomore campaign, he threw 14 interceptions. The quarterback watched the program transition after Billy Napier was fired and replaced by Jon Sumrall.
Beyond the coaching changes in the program, Lagway couldn't find what he was looking for in Florida.
"I was in a bubble down there, I didn't feel like a normal person," Lagway told USA Today Sports. "I didn't even know what the campus looked like. I was really closed off. I didn't really hang out with my teammates. Yeah, I was depressed. I just stayed in my own lane. Stayed out of the way."
Upon visiting Baylor, Lagway was convinced this was where he wanted to continue his career. He mentioned head coach Dave Aranda, offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, the atmosphere, and the resources available to the quarterback as major factors behind becoming a member of the Bears.
"The way Coach (Spavital) dials it up and just seeing what Sawyer did in the previous two years was definitely eye-catching to me," Lagway told reporters. "So I'm excited to continue to learn this offense and continue to get better."
According to Lagway, Baylor's offense gives him the freedom to throw, resembling his high school football, which he didn't have in Florida.
