A move to St James' Park would also appeal to Delap, who will be looking to get his career back on track after a poor debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso does not see the striker as part of his long-term plans, and he is almost certain to leave before the transfer window closes.
However, it remains to be seen if the Magpies are going to be the club to win the race to his signature.
