Newcastle United face an important selection dilemma ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa at St James' Park. Following a chastening 4-1 defeat against Coventry City, head coach Matthias Jaissle must decide whether returning players and a potential tactical adjustment can provide the response his side desperately require.
With several injuries complicating preparations, Newcastle United's predicted XI could feature significant changes, particularly in midfield and attack.
Jaissle enters the weekend with as many as five players potentially unavailable, although there is some encouragement regarding those approaching full fitness.
Anthony Elanga, Ewen Jaouen and Jacob Ramsey remain sidelined with thigh injuries, while Tino Livramento continues his recovery from an unspecified problem. Ramsey and Livramento are expected to require another week or two before returning to competitive action.
Bazoumana Traore represents another uncertainty after sustaining a knee injury during Monday's defeat at Coventry. Newcastle remain hopeful that the winger will receive medical clearance before Aston Villa arrive on Tyneside.
The encouraging development concerns Dan Burn and Joelinton, both of whom returned as substitutes against Coventry following injury absences.
Burn, however, is unlikely to be ready for a starting role, leaving Jaissle with decisions to make regarding his defensive organisation.

Perhaps the most intriguing selection question concerns Joelinton, who is available to make his first start of the season.
His return could encourage Jaissle to abandon the 4-2-3-1 formation in favour of a 4-3-3, providing Newcastle United with additional physicality and greater midfield presence against Aston Villa.
A midfield trio featuring Joelinton, Nico Gonzalez and Joe Willock offers an appealing combination of athleticism, ball progression and defensive intensity.
There is also a practical argument for making the change. Newcastle struggled badly against Coventry, and restoring Joelinton could help establish greater control in central areas.
Such an adjustment would potentially leave Yoane Wissa or Mathias Fernandez-Pardo facing a place among the substitutes.
Further forward, William Osula has emerged as a genuine contender to lead Newcastle United's attack.
Having recovered from injury, the striker could replace Wissa in the starting XI, with Harvey Barnes operating from the left and Jacob Murphy providing width on the opposite flank.
Osula's inclusion would give Jaissle another opportunity to assess his attacking options, particularly with Elanga unavailable.
Defensively, Amar Dedic is competing with Lewis Miley for the right-back position. Dedic appears the preferred option in the projected selection, alongside Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall.
Lukas Hornicek is expected to retain his place in goal.
Jaissle's biggest decision may ultimately concern the balance of his team. Against Aston Villa, Newcastle need greater midfield authority, improved defensive organisation and a more effective attacking structure.
Joelinton's availability provides an opportunity to address some of those concerns, while Osula's return offers a fresh option through the middle.
Newcastle United Predicted XI (4-3-3):
Goalkeeper: Lukas Hornicek
Defenders: Amar Dedic, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall
Midfielders: Joelinton, Nico Gonzalez, Joe Willock
Forwards: Jacob Murphy, William Osula, Harvey Barnes
