- Next Man Up: Devin White’s IR Stint Forces Reset in Lions' Linebacker Room
(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)
The Detroit Lions' defense hit another speed bump as veteran strongside linebacker Devin White was officially placed on injured reserve after suffering a broken forearm that will require surgery.
White, who brought dynamic sideline-to-sideline athleticism and championship experience to Detroit's front seven, went down during Detroit's victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The setback lands the former Pro Bowler on IR for at least four games, leaving defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard to retool his linebacker rotation on the fly.

DETROIT LIONS LINEBACKER DEPTH CHART
Player Jersey # Role / Position Status
Jack Campbell #46 Middle Linebacker (Starter)
Derrick Barnes #55 Linebacker
Malcolm Rodriguez #44 Linebacker
Devin White -- SAM Linebacker (Injured / IR - Forearm)
Jimmy Rolder #41 Linebacker (Rookie)
Trevor Nowaske #53 Linebacker
Amen Ogbongbemiga #57 Linebacker
Navigating the Absence: What White's Injury Means
Devin White's placement on IR strips Kelvin Sheppard's unit of a proven playmaker capable of diagnosing plays rapidly and blitzing through interior gaps. White's role as the starting SAM (strongside) linebacker was pivotal in stopping perimeter run plays and taking pass-coverage responsibilities off the safety group.

Without White patrolling the second level, Sheppard must rely on schematic flexibility, leaning more on nickel defensive packages or rotating hybrid defenders into the box to soften the blow against heavy run schemes.
Who Needs to Step Up the Most?
1. Jack Campbell (#46) — The Anchor Must Lead
As the middle linebacker and green-dot caller on defense, third-year linebacker Jack Campbell carries the heaviest burden. Campbell's size and tackling capabilities make him the centerpiece of Detroit's front, but with White sidelined, Campbell needs to assert his voice and elevate the play of those around him. Sheppard will look to Campbell to command alignment adjustments and ensure setting edges on run defense remains seamless.

2. Malcolm Rodriguez (#44) — The Primary Candidate
Fan-favorite "Rodrigo" is poised to see the largest spike in defensive snaps. Known for his instincts, leverage, and aggressive tackling, Malcolm Rodriguez possesses the quickness to slide into SAM or WILL packages. His ability to diagnose play-action rollouts will be critical as opposing offenses test Detroit's intermediate coverage without White.
3. Derrick Barnes (#55) — The Versatile Veteran
Derrick Barnes has repeatedly proven his value across multiple linebacker positions in Detroit. His versatility to slide between MIKE, WILL, and strongside roles allows Sheppard the luxury of moving pieces around based on match-ups. Barnes' physical play style at the point of attack will be essential when setting the edge against tight end-heavy formations.

Deep Depth and Special Teams Contributions
Behind Campbell, Barnes, and Rodriguez, the Lions will rely on depth assets:
*Trevor Nowaske (#53) & Amen Ogbongbemiga (#57): Both linebackers provide valuable snaps in heavy run-defense sub-packages and represent the core of Fipp's special teams coverage. Expect Nowaske or Ogbongbemiga to absorb backup defensive reps.
*Jimmy Rolder (#41): The rookie linebacker could see his developmental timeline accelerated. While primary roles belong to the veterans, Rolder's athleticism gives Sheppard an intriguing option if injuries further test the room's stamina.

The Path Forward for Kelvin Sheppard's Defense
Kelvin Sheppard has always preached a "next man up" philosophy. White's injury forces Detroit to prove its defensive depth. If Campbell can anchor the middle and Rodriguez seizes his expanded opportunity, Detroit's linebacker core has the talent and grit required to hold the line.
