Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young was an MVP candidate just two weeks ago.
However, after two bad games in a row against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Green Bay Packers, Young "is no longer in the MVP conversation," according to NFL analyst Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report .
Young did not play well in the Panthers' 27-19 loss to the Packers on Thursday Night Football last week. After his poor performances against Tampa Bay and Green Bay, questions will emerge as to whether the Panthers should sign Young to an extension next offseason.
Young is making $12.1 million this season in the fourth year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year option is worth a guaranteed $25.9 million. Carolina picked it up in the offseason.
The Panthers didn't sign Young to an extension, so he has to play well again this season to earn one next offseason.
Young led the Panthers to the playoffs last season, where Carolina lost to the Los Angeles Rams in a wild-card game at home. It's been impressive to watch Young's turnaround in Carolina. Remember, Young was benched for Andy Dalton in 2024. When that happened, many people thought Young's days in Carolina were over.
It's only two games, so we can't be too hard on Young, who has 1,921 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns and five interceptions this season. However, if the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft plays badly again next week against the Denver Broncos, there will be a lot of noise in Carolina about how Young is not a franchise QB.
Young has 10,212 passing yards and 62 passing touchdowns with Carolina. Let's see how he plays against Denver after struggling the past two weeks.
In other Panthers news, the team has hired DeAngelo Hall as their new cornerbacks coach.
Carolina hired Hall in 2023 as part of Frank Reich's staff. Hall was retained for a year by Dave Canales in 2024 but wasn't with the franchise in 2025.
The 42-year-old Hall played in 171 NFL games with the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins. He recorded 43 interceptions and made three Pro Bowls.
Hall holds the NFL record for most fumble-return yards, with 328 on 13 recoveries. He should help the Panthers' cornerbacks in a major way.
The Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero on Friday morning, hours after the team got home from Thursday night's 27-19 loss at Green Bay. Passing game coordinator Jonathon Cooley was let go too, and defensive line coach Todd Wash is the interim coordinator.
