The New York Giants received unwelcome news after the NFL announced fines for four players following Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders . The discipline stemmed from multiple personal fouls during New York's 34-10 win.
Safety Raheem Layne was fined $5,722 for unnecessary roughness involving helmet use. Rookie defensive back Tyler Nubin received a $10,324 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct tied to illegal celebrations and vulgar acts.
Cornerback Dru Phillips was fined $7,293 for a late hit that also fell under unnecessary roughness. Defensive back Rico Payton was fined twice on the same play. He was assessed two $5,333 fines for a late hit and for striking or kneeing the Raiders' Chigozie Anusiem .
The penalties came during a game that featured several physical moments. While the Giants snapped a nine-game losing skid, discipline issues remained evident. Interim coach Mike Kafka earned his first win, but the fines added another disappointment to a difficult season.
"The things we were playing for were each other," Kafka said after the game . "You get into a football locker room, it's a family. Sometimes you have to go through ups and downs, but you keep plugging away, keep on putting in the hard work and then you'll get the result that you want."
New York improved to 3-13 with the victory, though it remains last in the NFC East, led by the Philadelphia Eagles (11-5). Defensive lapses and inconsistency have defined the year. Despite the win, the Giants still face questions surrounding roster control and player discipline. The Raiders, now 2-14, remain on track for the top draft pick after another loss.
For the Giants, the focus shifts to closing the season strong. New York will host the Dallas Cowboys next, hoping to end a frustrating year strongly.
