Tight end Jake Tonges sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 49ers ' opener against the Los Angeles Rams .
And it got even worse on Saturday, as the NFL fined him for his actions on the play that ended his season.
The NFL fined Tonges $9,266 for a leg-whip block against Rams defensive end Myles Garrett in the second quarter. No penalty was called on the play, which resulted in Deebo Samuel 's 12-yard run.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also fined $20,033 for unnecessary roughness — illegal use of his helmet — on the 49ers' first play of the second half.
The Rams had two players fined: Tyler Davis was fined $6,225 for roughing the passer against Brock Purdy , described as a blow to the head and neck area. And Nate Landman was fined $11,111 for unnecessary roughness (use of helmet).
Tonges sustained an injury to his right knee and could not make it off the field under his own power. Afterward, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Tonges' injury was to his medial-collateral ligament, along with some other "issues."
The 49ers placed Tonges on season-ending injured reserve on Wednesday and promoted Brayden Willis from the practice squad to serve as the team's No. 3 tight end. Tonges signed a two-year, $8 million contract in the offseason as a restricted free agent.
Last year, Tonges caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns — mostly during the six games in which George Kittle was sidelined with an early season hamstring injury. Tonges has been one of the 49ers' core players on special teams.
