The traditional image of an NFL kicker is being challenged by a prospect whose workout numbers read like a glitch in a video game. At UTSA 's Pro Day on Wednesday, a 24-year-old prospect shocked the scouts with his statistically improbable performance.

Jaffer Murphy , a 6-foot-1 and 185-pound kicker, flaunted his raw power and elite speed. Despite a heavy Texas crosswind that hampered other specialists, Murphy drilled 12 of 13 field goals. One of those field goals was a thunderous 70-yard conversion. Even after the incredible showing, the youngster was far from finished.
Moments later, the kicker stepped up to the line for the 40-yard dash and went on to clock a stunning 4.50 seconds. To put that in perspective, a 4.50 is the gold standard for starting NFL cornerbacks and receivers.
The league's new kickoff rules place a premium on kickers who can move, tackle, and cover space. Murphy might have just skyrocketed his draft stock with that unprecedented performance.
Murphy's 4.50 speed allows him to serve as an extra safety on the field. He has the recovery speed to chase down elite returners, giving a team a 12th defender. He is a natural candidate for fake field goals and creative special teams packages.

His ability to convert 70-yard field goal attempts would allow a team to score points just after crossing the 45-yard line. This massive range puts constant pressure on opposing defenses and provides a scoring safety net for struggling offenses.
Jaffery Murphy's college career
Murphy started his athletic career as a soccer player at Drake and Florida Gulf Coast in 2020. Three years later, he switched to football at Lake Erie College. He set records for distance and accuracy while securing multiple honors.
He committed to Bill Belichick's North Carolina in January 2025. However, he entered the transfer portal later and joined the UTSA Roadrunners for his final season. He played all 13 games and charted 54 touchbacks (second-highest in one season in UTSA history) on 88 total kickoffs (second-most in program history ).
