The New York Islanders have missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons. There had been some speculation that teams were interested in trading for Islanders forward Mat Barzal .
Now, there is an update on the Islanders possibly trading Barzal or Bo Horvat , according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
"You know, the other thing I'll say about this is I think they did get calls on Horvat and I think they did get calls on Barzal, but now Horvat's at 8 and a half, Barzal's 9.15. All of a sudden, those are great contracts. You know, Horvat's 31, Barzal is 29. And they've both got five years left. You're not getting Bo Horvat at 5 times 8 and a half anymore. You're not getting Barzal at five times 9 plus right now," Friedman said. "And I think they look at it like if we lose these guys, those are going to open up huge holes to fill and we're not getting guys at those numbers. So, I think the way contracts are going makes it, I mean, someone can always blow you away with a great offer, but to me, I think it makes it less likely they're getting dealt."

While Barzal and Horvat are the two highest-paid players on the team, it is nowhere near what other contracts have been handed out so far in the offseason. Leo Carlsson just got $18 million , nearly double what Barzal is making. Nico Hischier is getting $11.7 million, while Ivan Demidov is getting $9.15 million. To get players at the production level of Horvat and Barzal is not going to be possible at their current salaries.
