The Tampa Bay Rays will have some difficult decisions to make this offseason, especially when it comes to their pitching staff.
And one of those decisions involves a player who made a significant impact both on and off the field throughout the 2026 season.

According to MLB.com, Tampa Bay and veteran pitcher Nick Martinez have both declined their $20 million mutual option for the 2027 season, making the right-hander a free agent.
The Rays will pay Martinez a $4 million buyout after he earned $9 million during the 2026 season.
While the decision was expected, losing Martinez would certainly be disappointing considering everything he accomplished during his first season with Tampa Bay.
The 36-year-old put together one of the best seasons of his career, finishing with a 15-6 record, 3.10 ERA, and 109 strikeouts across 180 innings in 31 starts.
And perhaps the most impressive part was how consistently Martinez gave Tampa Bay opportunities to win.

The Rays won 25 of the 35 games in which Martinez appeared throughout the regular season and postseason.
He also made important contributions during Tampa Bay's run to the World Series, allowing just five runs across 16 innings in four postseason appearances.
However, Martinez's impact went well beyond what he accomplished on the mound.
The veteran became one of the most important leaders inside Tampa Bay's clubhouse, helping establish the chemistry that played such a significant role in the organization's success.
Following the Rays' World Series loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Kevin Cash praised Martinez for everything he brought to the team.

"We spoke to it all season long: He's been the rock of our clubhouse," Cash said.
"We were a better team when Nick was on the mound because of how much support that he had from his teammates."
And Martinez certainly enjoyed his time with the organization.
"I love it here," Martinez said following Game 5. "It's been great. Love the guys. Love the organization. So we'll see what happens."
While Martinez is now free to explore opportunities with other organizations, bringing him back would be an ideal situation for Tampa Bay.
Especially considering the uncertainty surrounding Freddy Peralta's future a nd the decisions the Rays still need to make regarding their starting rotation.

However, the financial side of a potential reunion will be important.
Martinez is coming off a career year and could receive significant interest from other teams, including opportunities for a multi-year contract.
And while Tampa Bay would certainly benefit from retaining his services, committing too much money to a 36-year-old pitcher could create additional challenges for an organization that traditionally operates with a limited payroll.
The Rays will need to determine whether Martinez can provide similar production moving forward and how much they're willing to spend to keep him.
However, if the numbers make sense for both sides, bringing Martinez back should certainly be a priority.

Tampa Bay already knows what he can provide on the mound and inside the clubhouse.
And after everything the organization accomplished in 2026, keeping one of its most important veterans would be an ideal way to begin preparing for another potential World Series run.
