The No. 5 Michigan women's basketball has always prided itself on its defense and hustle plays. It's the foundation of the gritty identity the Wolverines center on year after year.
Prior to the 2026-27 season, Michigan had also gone 0-31 all-time against top-4 teams. The Wolverines finished short time after time last season, falling by just three points on three occasions to top-5 opponents in 2025-26.
But 2026-27 is a new season, marking the ascension of Michigan into the elite of collegiate women's basketball.
The Wolverines (1-0) defeated No. 2 Connecticut (1-1) behind an all-time identity performance, winning 77-66 to at long last secure the biggest win in program history, and first against a top-4 team. Junior wing Te'Yala Delfosse led Michigan with a career-high 22 points, along with nine rebounds, to secure the victory.
In the first half of Michigan's first top-five matchup at Crisler Center facing No. 2 Connecticut, the Wolverines went right at the perennial power and reigning National Player of the Year, forward Sarah Strong, by executing their fundamentals. Holding Strong scoreless in the first half and relegating her to the bench with three first-quarter fouls, Michigan put itself in its best possible position early on.
The Wolverines went with a 2-3 zone, challenging the Huskies to beat them from range. In UConn's first season post-Azzi Fudd, the WNBA's No. 1 overall draft pick and three-point weapon who helped the Huskies narrowly defeat Michigan in the programs' first matchup last season, it was a well-targeted strategy. UConn went just 3-for-14 from deep in the first half, allowing the Wolverines to stay in the zone until the Huskies could force them out of it. Led by junior wing Te'Yala Delfosse, the Wolverines held tight, limiting the Huskies to just eight second-quarter points.
Michigan's defensive success meant its offense didn't need to be perfect. The Wolverines shot 37.5 percent from the floor and just 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Yet their characteristic hustle plays — marked by nine offensive rebounds — extended possessions, and seven points off nine forced UConn turnovers led Michigan into the halftime locker room with a 35-29 lead.
The Huskies made some immediate second-half adjustments, beginning with re-entering Strong after an eight-minute first half and trusting her with three fouls. Strong's first touch was a straightaway 3-pointer, the first of 11 third-quarter points in a stat-stuffing 10 minutes which included three rebounds and two assists. Strong muscled the Huskies to a 48-46 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter.
Yet Delfosse and the Wolverines stayed right in it. An offensive putback layup from the junior wing catalyzed a 58-second 7-0 run to swing the score back in Michigan's favor, 53-48. Trading blows to close the quarter, the Wolverines led 55-53 entering the final frame — anyone's game.
In the final frame, Michigan stayed true to its identity and built its lead. One secured loose ball after another, forcing Huskies mistakes, the Wolverines constructed their largest lead of the night to nine with three minutes remaining, up 70-61 following five points from All-American junior guard Olivia Olson. They charged downhill, attacking UConn in the paint and continuing to draw fouls in transition.
Never hurrying, Michigan took the game one possession at a time. Each Huskies punch, the Wolverines swung back.
And finally, after going 0-31 all-time leading into the game against top-four opponents, heartbreak after heartbreak, Michigan carved its place in the upper echelon of women's basketball.
