The Chicago Bulls landed a proven scorer after agreeing to terms with Norman Powell on Wednesday.
Powell spent last season with the Miami Heat , who could not give him a lucrative deal due to the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo . It was expected that Miami would have to let go of either Powell or Andrew Wiggins . The Heat gave Wiggins a three-year, $64 million contract.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported Powell's big move to the Bulls.
"Free agent Norman Powell has agreed to a two-year, $45 million deal with the Chicago Bulls , sources tell ESPN. Powell joins the Bulls as a potent scorer after an NBA All-Star season in Miami, averaging nearly 22 points over the last two years," wrote Charania on X.
ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel intimated that it was a logical decision for Chicago, which has been mired in mediocrity over the past decade. The Bulls have only qualified for the playoffs twice in the last 10 years.
"Signing Norman Powell to $45 million over the next two seasons essentially uses the remainder of the Bulls' cap space," noted Siegel on X.
"Powell will be a key scoring weapon next to Josh Giddey , Caleb Wilson, Matas Buzelis , and Nic Claxton in the Bulls' starting rotation."
In 58 games with the Heat this season, the 33-year-old Powell averaged 21.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals.
He is expected to play a heavy role on offense for the Bulls. Do not be surprised if he averages over 25 points next season.
Miami did not want to part ways with Powell , especially after his productive stint. Financial constraints, however, left both sides with no choice, prompting the veteran guard to secure his future elsewhere.
