North Carolina Freshman Gaining Buzz Before 2026 Season
The North Carolina Tar Heels hit the reset button this offseason, digging deeper in recruiting and bringing in legendary coach Bobby Petrino to run the offense.
Those moves were necessary after UNC finished with a 4-8 record last season.
How fast North Carolina can improve in one offseason remains to be seen. It's still unclear if the Tar Heels have enough juice on the roster to compete with the big boys in the ACC like Miami , Clemson, Louisville, and SMU.
A challenging start to the season against TCU, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Pitt before mid-October could threaten Bill Belichick's second season as head coach. Belichick will need to develop some young playmakers quickly to stay in contention to even make a bowl game.
Brad Crawford of CBS Sports thinks a freshman wide receiver could make an instant impact in Chapel Hill this fall. He named C.J. Sadler as a freshman to watch in the ACC this season.
"One of 40 signees in Bill Belichick's first recruiting class, Sadler is expected to be part of North Carolina's offensive rebuild under new coordinator Bobby Petrino," Crawford wrote.
"One of Michigan's top prospects, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound playmaker has the quickness to carve out a role in the slot. Petrino's passing game emphasizes getting the ball out quickly, making Sadler a natural fit for touches near the line of scrimmage. He should also contribute in the return game."
Special teams are another element of North Carolina's game that needs to improve this offseason. Belichick's special teams were usually a plus when he was the head coach of the New England Patriots .
Having some dynamic returners should change the starting field position for the Tar Heels, which could aid Petrino's offense by giving the team a short field.
Any advantage for the Tar Heels will be helpful this season against one of the harder schedules in the conference.
Sadler could be a rising star for North Carolina and someone for the team to build around in the next few seasons. Whoever wins the quarterback job will likely be expected to make shorter throws this season, and getting the ball into the hands of Sadler could be ideal, as he has dynamic playmaking potential.
