- Northwestern Forward Announces Leave of Absence Before Season Opener
Northwestern men's basketball will be without an important piece of its frontcourt for the foreseeable future after fourth-year forward Luke McEldon announced he is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the program.
The Wildcats announced the news Monday, releasing a brief statement expressing their support for McEldon and their hope that he will eventually return.

No additional details were provided about the reason for McEldon's leave or when he could potentially rejoin the team. His absence is a significant development for Northwestern as it prepares to begin the 2026-27 regular season, especially considering the role he appeared to be taking on during the team's preseason.
McEldon started both of Northwestern's exhibition games against Illinois State and Iowa State , making him an important part of the Wildcats' early frontcourt plans. The 6-foot-10 forward transferred to Evanston from Mount St. Mary's, where he averaged 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 64.5% from the field last season.

His experience and production made him an important addition to a Northwestern roster that underwent significant changes during the offseason.

Head coach Chris Collins brought in eight transfers as part of a roster overhaul, with McEldon expected to provide a physical presence inside and help the Wildcats compete against some of the Big Ten's bigger frontcourts.
Now, Northwestern will have to find a way to replace that production and adjust its rotation before the season gets underway.
The Wildcats still have several options in the frontcourt, but McEldon's absence puts more pressure on the players who remain. Okku Federiko, Ryan Soulis and freshman center Symon Ghai could all have opportunities to take on larger roles as Collins looks for a consistent rotation.
Ghai, who stands at 7-foot-3, gives Northwestern an intriguing option with his size, while Federiko and Soulis bring additional experience and versatility. However, replacing McEldon's combination of size, scoring ability and rebounding will likely require contributions from multiple players rather than one direct replacement.

The situation also creates another challenge for a team that is still working to develop chemistry with so many new faces.
Northwestern lost both of its exhibition games, falling 70-64 to Illinois State before suffering a 94-59 defeat against No. 18 Iowa State. Although exhibition results do not determine how the regular season will unfold, the Wildcats now have even less time to establish their frontcourt rotation.
The timing is particularly important with Northwestern set to open its regular season Monday night against Binghamton at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats will need their remaining big men to step up immediately as they begin a schedule that will eventually bring the physical demands of Big Ten play.
McEldon's leave is a major loss for Northwestern's frontcourt depth, particularly after he appeared to establish himself as a starting option during the preseason.

While the program has expressed its support and hopes for his return, the Wildcats must now adjust and find answers inside. How Federiko, Soulis, Ghai and the rest of the frontcourt respond will be one of the biggest storylines to monitor as Northwestern begins its season.
