- Northwestern Provides Encouraging Update on Jackson Carsello
Northwestern received an encouraging update Sunday on veteran center and captain Jackson Carsello after he suffered a neck injury during Saturday night's season opener against South Dakota State .
Carsello went down in the third quarter of Northwestern 's 34-18 win and spent a significant amount of time receiving medical attention on the field. The situation created a scary moment at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium as Carsello was eventually stretched off the field and taken to the hospital.

"Carsello returned to the team's facility last night and is doing well," Northwestern said in a statement. "He is up and walking, feeling good overall."
That is the news everyone around Northwestern was hoping to hear.
Carsello gave a thumbs-up as he was being taken off the field, providing an encouraging sign during an otherwise frightening moment. Seeing him back at the team's facility, up, walking, and feeling good overall brings an even bigger sense of relief after Saturday night's injury.

While the immediate focus is on Carsello's health, his importance to this Northwestern team cannot be overlooked.

A Veteran Leader in the Middle
Carsello entered the 2026 season as one of Northwestern's six team captains and one of the most experienced players on the roster. He has taken a significant number of snaps at center and has become someone the Wildcats can rely on in the middle of the offensive line.
That experience is especially valuable for quarterback Aidan Chiles .
The center-quarterback relationship is one of the most important connections on the field. Every offensive snap starts with those two players, requiring communication, timing and trust before the ball is even put into play.
Carsello has been the player next to Chiles on every snap, helping the new Northwestern quarterback get comfortable with the offense and communicate what is needed at the line of scrimmage.

Losing that experience, even temporarily, would be a significant adjustment for both Chiles and the entire offense.
Next Man Up at Center
After Carsello left Saturday's game, Anthony Birsa stepped in and took over at center. That could become an important storyline to watch as Northwestern moves forward.
If Carsello is forced to miss time, Chiles and Birsa will have to build the same type of communication and trust that Chiles had developed with Carsello. That includes everything from identifying defensive looks to making pre-snap adjustments and ensuring the Wildcats are on the same page at the line of scrimmage.

There will naturally be an adjustment period if Birsa becomes the starter, but Saturday also gave him valuable game experience in a difficult situation.
For Chiles, developing that connection with whoever is snapping him the football will be crucial.
Northwestern's offense showed plenty of promise in its first game under offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, finishing with 497 total yards and 224 rushing yards. Keeping that production going will require consistency up front, especially as the Wildcats prepare for the rest of the season.
For now, though, football takes a back seat to Carsello's health.

The encouraging update from Northwestern provides a major sense of relief after a scary scene Saturday night. Carsello's eventual return to the field will be something to monitor closely, but seeing the veteran captain back at the team's facility, walking around and feeling good is the most important development coming out of the weekend.
Northwestern will have plenty to figure out at center if Carsello needs time away, but the Wildcats can worry about that later.
