PITTSBURGH —WhenAaron Rodgerswas a young quarterback with theGreen Bay Packers, Brett Favre was the established starter for the franchise. Rodgers, the team's first-round pick, had to wait his turn, bide his time, and learn.
While Rodgers did learn, and eventually became every bit the successful starter that Favre had been and then some, it wasn't thanks to much help from Favre.

Favre admitted that he didn't see it as his role to help mentor Rogers as the Packers prepared for the younger quarterback to take over.
"I don't know where the present starter like myself in that case, is paid to be a mentor, so to speak, or if that's part of the job description," Favre said to Graham Bensinger in 2016. "I think maybe there's a misconception. I don't owe him or anyone else anything other than, in my opinion, being a nice guy and thoughtful, but I don't have to give him any insights into what I do or don't do."
Suffice to say, Rodgers doesn't feel the same way. He spent the 2025 season takingSteelers' sixth-round rookieWill Howardunder his wing, and now that he's back for the 2026 season, he's looking to do the same with third-round pickDrew Allar.

Rodgers was asked about that part of his role with the Steelers on Wednesday after the team's second practice of OTAs, and he was asked in a way that called back to Favre's comments about their time together.

"To coin a phrase after a guy that I've followed, it's not in my job description, but I think it's a great opportunity, for sure, to be able to mentor those guys," Rodgers said.
"It means a lot to me, all the backups I've had over the years, and I have a good relationship still to this day with those guys, the fun I had with Will last year. [I'll] try and mentor Drew as much as he wants me to, and keep staying on Will."
It's pretty clear that Rodgers felt differently then about how his relationship with Favre should have gone and he's sought out a different path during his time as the senior quarterback on a team, first with the Packers andJordan Loveand now with a pair of young quarterbacks with the Steelers.
