Sam Kennedy gave Alex Bregman an opening to talk about his departure from the Boston Red Sox Sunday when the team’s president gave his own opinion on the negotiations.
“Look, if Alex Bregman wanted to be here, ultimately he’d be here,” Kennedy said from JetBlue Park .
Later in the week, Bregman didn’t bite at the opportunity to respond.
Bregman signed a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs that included a no-trade clause. The Red Sox offer did not include a no-trade clause.
“It was more than just that,” Bregman said, according to USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale .
When asked whether or not Bregman would have still chosen the Cubs had the Red Sox matched Chicago’s offer and given him a no-trade clause, Bregman stood firm.
“I just really don’t want to get into it,” he said. “It’s not worth it.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said earlier in the week that he still had a “great relationship” with his former third basemen and that they still talk.
“Happy for him. You put everything into perspective,” Cora said. “It didn’t work out here as far as like the business side of it, but we have relationships. ... The business side is (the) business side. But we wish him nothing but the best and see him in September.”
Bregman also noted his relationship with Cora and the Red Sox players, as well as the experience of playing at Fenway Park.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox in February of 2025, but he had player opt-outs after the first and second seasons. He triggered his first opt-out and became a free agent in early November after batting .273 with a .360 on-base percentage, .462 slugging percentage, .821 OPS, 18 home runs, 28 doubles and 62 RBIs in 114 games.
When asked if he thought he would return to Boston, Bregman said he was unsure.
“I didn’t know, I really didn’t know,” Bregman said, according to Nightengale. “I obviously loved my time there. Love all of the guys there. Love AC. I’ll always cherish it.
“Playing at Fenway is unbelievable. The fans in Boston are unbelievable. My teammates were incredible. I’ll be a fan of (theirs) for life. I loved playing for AC and the coaching staff there. They mean a lot to me.”
Bregman will return to Fenway Park in September when the Cubs play a three-game road series from Sept. 25 - 27.
