Most of Notre Dame 's 2026 recruiting class enrolled early, and for some it gives them a huge advantage to see the field early, which looks like the case this year .
On Wednesday, BlueandGold.com reported that defensive coordinator Chris Ash confirmed that safety Joey O'Brien will have a role this fall. Most likely a starting role isn't in the cards, as Brauntae Johnson and Adon Shuler have locked themselves into those spots.
Coming out of high school, O'Brien was ranked as the No. 28 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite , the top safety nationally and second ranked player in Pennsylvania . He entered the program at 188-pounds and is already up to 200 with plenty of room to grow. While the coaches nor O'Brien have talked about it, if he continues to put on more mass, he'd be a fantastic linebacker.
Right now, he's a true freshman that has earned his way onto the field, as Notre Dame has yet another top safety in O'Brien following an impressive lineage of former players.
