Notre Dame has very few true freshmen that can make a huge impact going into the 2026 CFB season. And that is a very good thing.
Notre Dame football enters the 2026 season with one of the most complete rosters in recent program history , and that roster construction is creating an unusual dynamic for the Fighting Irish true freshman class.
Head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff have recruited, retained, and supplemented through the transfer portal at such a high level that projecting immediate contributors from the incoming 2026 recruiting class is a difficult exercise. That reality speaks volumes about where Notre Dame stands as a program.
For those who follow Notre Dame recruiting closely, the praise for Freeman's staff has been constant over the last couple of years.
The recruiting rankings won't always tell the full story, but what Freeman and the Irish staff have accomplished goes beyond landing elite talent. They have put together complete classes without many holes, retained top players on the roster, and combined those two elements to build uncommon depth. The process has been impressive to watch.
On offense, five-star tight end Ian Premer stands out as the most likely true freshman to see significant playing time. Premer profiles as a player who will be on the field a lot for Notre Dame this season, though the days of a freshman tight end walking into a TE1 role the way Michael Mayer did several years ago are gone. The depth at the position simply won't demand that.
Beyond Premer, some candidates could work their way into rotational roles. Running backs Javian Osborne and Jonaz Walton could fight for touches at the back end of the rotation. Wide receivers Devin Fitzgerald and Bubba Frazier could ascend to second-team reps at some point during the season. None of those scenarios are certain, though.
There is also the question of whether one of the freshman quarterbacks, Noah Grubbs or Teddy Jarrard , assumes the backup role. Outside of Premer, there simply aren't many offensive true freshmen you can project with confidence to take on significant roles.
The defensive side of the football tells a similar story.
Rodney Dunham is going to play at defensive end and could see an increased role as the season progresses. Khary Adams has a path to becoming a second-team cornerback, and Joey O'Brien could mix into the safety rotation. Beyond that group, the opportunities dry up quickly.
Not long ago, a player like Dunham would have been a starting defensive end at Notre Dame early in his career. Not long ago, a talent like Kaydon Finley or Fitzgerald might have been in the conversation to start at wide receiver. The fact that those conversations aren't realistic anymore is the point, and a very good thing.
The inability for true freshmen to crack the lineup is a direct reflection of how well Notre Dame has constructed its roster. Freeman and his staff have plugged gaps through the transfer portal in targeted, low-volume fashion at positions of need like defensive tackle and wide receiver. They have paired that approach with strong high school recruiting classes and elite retention of existing talent.
In the volatile world of the transfer portal and NIL, Notre Dame has been as effective as any program in the country at combining those three elements. The result is a roster where freshmen have to wait their turn, which is a sign of program health rather than a concern.
The next step for Freeman is actualizing all of that accumulated talent into production on the field - winning the biggest games, making another run at the national title, and potentially finishing the job this time. There are still things for Freeman to prove on that front. Even through some questionable injuries and depth chart conversations this offseason, the depth of talent at Notre Dame is as strong as it has been in quite some time.
