USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect
Notre Dame's 2026 roster features seven players whose fathers played in the NFL, including three Hall of Famers and four Super Bowl champions. This group brings a unique blend of talent and discipline that head coach Marcus Freeman values highly. The program is not chasing these recruits for a quick fix, but the results show a clear pattern of success on the field.
Jerome Bettis Jr. leads the charge as a wide receiver in his second season, while Elijah Burress and Devin Fitzgerald add depth and speed to the offense. These players grew up watching the pros, so they understand the grind before they even step onto the practice field. Their presence changes the dynamic of the team, creating a culture where high standards are the norm, not the exception.

A Roster Full of Football History
The Fighting Irish have built a sustainable program that aims for a national title every year. A key part of this recipe involves recruiting sons of former NFL greats. The 2026 team includes seven members with NFL lineage. Three Hall of Famers, four Super Bowl champions, and three winners of the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year award are part of this group of former players. That is a lot of pedigree for one team to hold.
As a freshman Bettis Jr. appeared in only one game, yet he has received increased playing time as his role grows. In 2025, he had one reception for six yards. This year, he has four catches for 92 yards across six games, averaging 23.0 yards per reception. His father, Jerome Bettis, is a Hall of Famer, so the pressure is familiar.
Elijah Burress, son of Plaxico Burress, also plays wide receiver. He has provided depth in his first two seasons and now sees an increased role. His stats show steady growth, with four catches for 63 yards and one touchdown in two games this season. Devin Fitzgerald, the son of Larry Fitzgerald, is a freshman who committed before the 2026 season. He has two catches for 25 yards in four games so far.

Why These Players Choose South Bend
Coaches often say they love the character these recruits bring. They grew up with the accountability that football requires. Former safety Ryan Clark, whose son Jordan played for Notre Dame in 2024, explained the appeal of the program. Regarding accountability, he stated, "For me, it was about the accountability that they had, both as players and as people to be told, 'Listen, you have to show up for class. You're going to be expected to do that,'" Clark said, via Forbes, according to Yahoo Sports .
Clark added that the school does not let students ignore their duties. Such a school will not permit you to evade that responsibility. Teenagers who grew up around professional players seem more willing to take on tougher coaching. They know what it takes to make it, and they are ready to put in the work. This mindset helps the team stay focused during long seasons.
Notre Dame general manager Mike Martin addressed the recruiting strategy directly. He noted that the program offers many characteristics that these recruits covet. "Honestly, we're not intentionally targeting them," Martin said, via Forbes. He added, "I wouldn't say that we're making it a point to go specifically target these guys, but I think they're drawn to us because of all the things that we offer."

The Bond of Shared Experience
Playing with other NFL sons creates a unique bond on the team. It helps them navigate the pressures of college football when they know someone else understands. Kaydon Finley, son of tight end Jermichael Finley, spoke about this connection. "It's really cool to be surrounded by other NFL sons," Finley said. Having those guys around provides a support system that others might lack.
Devin Fitzgerald echoed this sentiment, adding that the shared history is valuable. "It's just cool having a few of those guys on the team with you that you can always talk to and share experiences with." This camaraderie can make a difference in tough moments. When the game gets hard, having a teammate who knows exactly what you are going through helps keep morale high.
The roster is full of this lineage, which changes how the team approaches practice and games. They are not just learning the playbook; they are learning the life of a pro. Bryce Young, son of Bryant Young, is another name on the list. While specific metrics for every player are not always public, the trend is clear. The program is attracting the next generation of football families.

Notre Dame is currently 6-0 and riding a 16-game win streak. They have won every contest by double digits since Purdue in 2025. The team faces a tough test against No. 8 BYU on Saturday night. The game will be played at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. This matchup has major College Football Playoff implications.
The Irish defense is one of the best in the country, and the offense has talented weapons led by junior quarterback C.J. Carr. The presence of NFL sons adds a layer of physicality and discipline that helps in big games. These players do not shy away from contact or pressure. They know the stakes because they have heard about them their whole lives.
The upcoming game against the undefeated Cougars will test this depth. BYU is physical and disciplined, but Notre Dame has shown they can handle that style. The altitude in Utah is the only real outlier for the Irish, but they have played in big environments before.
