- Notre Dame VS Purdue is put on “pause” by the Boilers for 2027

The future college football schedule merry-go-round continues to spin this week, and in fitting form as the first set of college football playoff rankings are announced. As we all move toward the 24 team playoff, there will certainly be some scheduling changes — and Notre Dame never seems to be immune to those.
On Tuesday, Purdue announced that it is pausing its series with Notre Dame, and will pick up West Virginia for the 2027 schedule.
The addition of the West Virginia matchup will place a pause on Purdue's longstanding series against Notre Dame. Due to schedule movement involving multiple schools, an exact date will be unveiled at a later time.
"With the expected expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, there will be scheduling parameters for schools to follow, including having 10 regular season games against power conference opponents," said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tommy McClelland. "Getting Coach Odom's program into matchups that best serve our goals and ambitions has been a focus of mine since arriving in West Lafayette, and we are excited to add this game with West Virginia. The tradition-rich rivalry of Purdue and Notre Dame, a matchup that has been played on and off 90 times in program history, will be reevaluated for potential addition to future schedules."
TLDR… Purdue doesn't want all of that Irish smoke until they have properly purchased a breathing apparatus.
Notre Dame will now need to add a 12th opponent to its schedule (which they probably already have but will still need to announce). Maybe the new 2027 opponent will be Texas Tech who hinted at announcing a new opponent for 2027 last week but never did announce anything.
