The New York Giants secondary was widely looked at as one of team's weaknesses coming into the 2026 season. The Giants were widely expected to make a splash to rebuild a unit that disappointed in 2025, but instead they merely brought in cornerback Greg Newsome II.
Newsome II was a former first round pick by the Browns, but his career stalled in Cleveland and he was traded by the Browns to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025. So he was looked at as a flier at best when he signed a one-year deal with the Giants in the spring of 2026.
At least that's how the media at large viewed him. Newsome still saw himself as a first round corner and was willing to bet on himself if he could land in the right situation.
Six games later, Newsome has signed a three-year, $46 million extension to make New York his home through the 2029 season.
"I believed wholeheartedly after I signed a one-year," he said on Wednesday. "I knew the type of person I was, first and foremost. And I knew what type of player I was and I knew that if I just get to the right place, that the money will take care of itself. I feel like when you're somewhere that you're wanted, you're somewhere that you're loved, everything else takes care of itself. So, I knew this would be the place."
He added that he was very intentional in wanting to come play for John Harbaugh and the New York Giants.
"My first thing was fit," Newsome said. "What coaches know me, and that was the biggest thing. I obviously played against Harbs a lot, so he knew what type of player I was, and I knew what type of coach he was. So, that was kind of my first thing, alright, fit. How did his defenses play in the past? Because that's going to be kind of how the defense will be playing in New York."
From there, Newsome decided to bet on himself in big market. He knew a "Ravens" style defense would fit his skill set, and that the city would be a fit as well as the coach and system.
"So, I figured, how about I sign in one year?" he added. "How about I come to New York and just play in front of a big media outlet? I feel like my personality will be able to show more in this city. So, that was kind of my thought process.
"I think it starts from the top down," he said when asked what makes the Giants such a great fit.
"Starting obviously with ownership, just how they carry themselves. It goes down to the head coach and it keeps going down. So, just what Harbs (Head Coach John Harbaugh) has just instilled, just the toughness of how we're going to play, things like that. And then, (Defensive Coordinator) Dennard (Wilson) has the perfect scheme for me. Being able to go challenge people, being aggressive and things like that. And just, man, just the ability to play with all 11 guys. We got some of the best players in the league, so they make my job a lot easier as well."
Speaking of the rest of the Giants' defense, Newsome whole-heartedly believes in his teammates and their ability to be great.
"I think the biggest thing with us was just proving ourselves right," he said. "I said it from the first time [he spoke to the New York media] that we had the best secondary, and everybody was laughing. But I knew the talent that we had, and like I said in the beginning, it was just how tight we are as a room. When you got guys all competing essentially for the same job, sometimes it's a lot of bad blood in that. But we really care for each other. We really want each other to succeed no matter who's out there. So, I think the biggest thing, how we've been growing these past few weeks is just our communication. And I think it's showing between these first seven games."
It has been showing itself. The Giants are third in passing yardage allowed, third in passing yards per game allowed, and second in yards per attempt allowed.
"I think it's just the same mindset we always have." he said. Just to continue to go 1-0 each week, just get better on the little things and don't become complacent."
The fit — people, teammates, and scheme — is everything. And Newsome made it clear that New York is where he wants to be, and he was willing to take less money to stay a Giant for the foreseeable future.
"You obviously could play it [his one-year contract] out, maybe make a few more millions, continue to play well," he said. "But for me, it's not really about that. Once again, I chose this place because it just fits me. The coaches, my teammates, I just love being around these guys. So, when they approached us with a deal, it was a no-brainer. It wasn't, 'how about I play it out and maybe make a few more millions?' Obviously, it would be great to have a few more but when you're somewhere that you're wanted and loved, the money, I'm getting good enough money that I'll be secure for the rest of my life."
