NORMAN, Okla. - The lights turn back on at the Lloyd Noble Center tonight, Monday, November 2, 2026, as the Oklahoma Sooners tip off their 2026–27 campaign against East Texas A&M.
On paper, there is plenty of reason for optimism: Porter Moser enters his sixth season leading a roster that might be his deepest, most experienced, and most balanced since taking the job. Fresh off a 21-win season that wrapped up with a run to the championship game of The College Basketball Crown, OU opens the year sitting at No. 29 in the preseason KenPom ratings .

In a SEC loaded with heavyweight talent—where ten programs rest inside the KenPom top 30—national consensus projection models have the Sooners slotted around a 23–9 overall record with a 9–9 conference mark, positioning them roughly eighth in the SEC.
Beyond the metrics, however, hangs a clear reality: this season is about survival and expectation. Following a turbulent spring where Moser narrowly avoided the hot seat after a mid-season standard slump, new athletic director Roger Denny opted to retain the head coach. Denny didn't just hand over a vote of confidence; he reshaped the program's structural backing.
Oklahoma hired general manager Lucas McKay and drastically increased NIL and roster investment—pushing program resources to an estimated $15 million to $17.5 million.
Having guided OU to just a single NCAA Tournament appearance across five seasons—while painfully finding his squad on the "First Four Out" bubble three separate times—Moser no longer operates with the defense of a resource-strapped program. With only one year remaining on his contract after this season and a 76-team expanded tournament field leaving zero margins for error, the mandate from the administration down to the fans is clear: turn this paper potential into a March Madness ticket, or the program moves on.

A Loaded, Century-Tested Backcourt and Rotation
If Moser is going to secure his long-term future in Norman, he will do so on the backs of one of the most battle-tested rotations in college basketball. Oklahoma holds an SEC-leading five players who have logged 100 or more career college games. Tae Davis (134 games) and Villanova transfer big man Duke Brennan (133 games) headline that veteran milestone, while B.J. Edwards (110), Xzayvier Brown (104), and Pop Isaacs (100) round out a group that won't get rattled by crowd noise or late-clock situations.
The offense will flow through a backcourt that features three returning double-figure scorers in Xzayvier Brown, Tae Davis, and forward Derrion Reid. Brown was the engine of last year's squad, logging a team-high 1,199 minutes while dropping 15.4 points per game on 87.4% shooting from the charity stripe alongside 122 assists and 48 steals.
Alongside Brown, Pop Isaacs brings high-volume scoring punch (1,277 career points) and perimeter lethalness as a 35% career three-point shooter. Edwards, cleared to play following a temporary restraining order, adds ACC All-Defensive level length and decision-making to relieve point-guard duties.

Up front, the Sooners match that guard depth with raw physical size and versatility. Tae Davis (13.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1,365 career points) and Derrion Reid (11.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG) return as reliable scoring wings. Duke Brennan provides muscle down low after topping 1,040 career points, and he leads active NCAA players with 919 rebounds. Brennan is complemented by sophomore center Kai Rogers and incoming freshman forward Gage Mayfield.
In the second unit, local product Dayton Forsythe (Dale, OK) is primed to take on expanded responsibilities as a key scoring option off the bench. While Isaacs and Tyler Hendricks are locked in as traditional fifth-year players with prior medical redshirts, both Brennan and Edwards enter the lineup fully eligible, while Davis continues navigating final eligibility processes.
Other notable additions include senior center Yaak Yaak from Oregon State. Yaak had double-figure scoring games with the Beavers. Also joining the fold is junior forward Khani Rooths . Rooths brings plenty of experience, having played in 66 games over two seasons at Louisville.
KenPom Breakdown: Balancing the Floor

Analytics models view Oklahoma as a legitimate top-30 baseline team capable of competing with anyone in the SEC. Their preseason breakdown highlights why:
• Efficiency Metrics (+21.87 NetRtg): OU is projected to outscore opponents by roughly 22 points per 100 possessions against an average D-1 opponent.
• Balanced Dual-Threat Profile: An Adjusted Offensive Rating (ORtg) of 118.6 paired with an Adjusted Defensive Rating (DRtg) of 96.7 puts Oklahoma in elite company, reflecting top-30 capabilities on both ends of the floor.
• Controlled Pace (71.1 AdjT): Moser's team will play at a slightly above-average tempo—looking for rapid transition chances without allowing games to turn into sloppy track meets.

• Neutral Luck Baseline (+.000): KenPom's luck index means their No. 29 rank isn't inflated by close-game statistical bounces; it reflects pure roster evaluation and projectable efficiency.
Non-Conference Gauntlet: Early Tests Before SEC Play
Moser and his staff didn't build a soft non-conference schedule to inflate win totals; they designed a slate meant to sharpen this veteran group for conference play.
Following home contests against East Texas A&M tonight and Mississippi Valley State, the Sooners head to Fort Myers, Florida, for high-profile neutral-site showdowns against Pittsburgh on November 24 and Purdue on November 26.

December brings zero relief:
• Home: Hosting Syracuse at the Lloyd Noble Center.
• Neutral/Road: Traveling to Tulsa to take on Arizona State.
• In-State Rivalry: Crossing paths with Oklahoma State for the Bedlam matchup in Oklahoma City.
• Road: A tough true road clash against SMU.
Everything leads up to Friday, January 2, 2027, when Oklahoma opens SEC action at home against Kentucky.
With elite financial backing, clear analytical potential, and five players boasting over 100 college games under their belts, the stage is set.
For Porter Moser, the formula is simple: execute, land solidly in the NCAA Tournament field, and erase any doubt about the direction of Oklahoma basketball.
