Owen Heinecke 's path to this point has never been the easy one. That is part of why the latest honor hits the way it does.
The Oklahoma linebacker was named the Burlsworth Trophy National Walk-On of the Week after his performance in the Sooners' 27-24 win over No. 1 Texas , the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation announced.

To even be eligible for the award, a player has to have started his career as a walk-on. Heinecke checks that box the hard way. He is in his sixth collegiate year and spent his first three seasons at Oklahoma as a walk-on before becoming one of the clear centers of the defense.
Against Texas , he played like it.
Heinecke led the Sooners with nine tackles, including a career-high 2.5 for loss, and added a quarterback hurry. The more impressive part was how disruptive those tackles were. Five of his nine stops held Texas to one yard or fewer. Seven held the Longhorns under three.
That is not just a guy running around and filling up a stat sheet. That is a linebacker living near the line of scrimmage and shrinking the offense's margin on early downs.

The consistency around that performance is what makes him such an important piece for Brent Venables . Heinecke is a 2026 team captain, has started all five games this season, and has been Oklahoma 's leading tackler in four of them. He now has 16.5 career tackles for loss, all since the start of last season, and ranks second on the team this year with 4.5.
For a defense that has had to carry the Sooners through some uneven offensive stretches, that kind of week-to-week production matters. Heinecke is not a one-game flash. He is one of the guys the whole operation leans on.
The Texas setting made the award even cleaner. Oklahoma's win was its first over a No. 1 team since 2007, its first over an AP No. 1 while unranked, and its first over Texas when the Longhorns sat at No. 1 in the AP poll. Those games need somebody in the middle of the defense to set a physical tone when the stadium is loud and the margins are tiny. Heinecke did that.
The Sooners needed takeaways and short fields from the back end, and they got them. They also needed the front seven to keep Texas from settling into comfortable drives. Heinecke was a big reason that happened.

There is also the larger backdrop that makes his whole season feel different. This year almost did not happen for him. The NCAA initially ruled him ineligible by counting a brief 2021 lacrosse appearance at Ohio State against his eligibility clock, and Heinecke had to go to court and secure a preliminary injunction just to keep playing.
A lot of players would have been swallowed by that process. He fought through it, stayed ready, and has spent the first month of the season reminding everybody why Oklahoma needed him back on the field.
That walk-on-to-captain arc was already a good story. The eligibility fight made it a better one.
The numbers for the year back up the eye test too. Heinecke has 37 total tackles and a sack through five games, with the nine-tackle day against Texas sitting at the top of the list. For a former walk-on from Tulsa who had to earn every bit of his role, that is a pretty strong answer to any remaining doubt about where he fits on this roster.

As usual, the calendar does not leave much time to sit with the honor. Oklahoma is 3-2 and 1-1 in the SEC with No. 15/17 Kentucky coming to Norman on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network.
Heinecke has already shown what he can do in the biggest environment of the year. The next job is the same one this whole team is facing after Dallas: turn one loud afternoon into a standard.
For one week, though, the recognition fits. Heinecke started as a walk-on, fought to stay eligible, and then went out and led the defense in a win over the No. 1 team in the country.
That is exactly the kind of player the Burlsworth Trophy is supposed to spotlight.
