After earning a starting spot on the Washington Huskies ' defensive line coming out of fall camp, it didn't take long for freshman defensive tackle Derek Colman-Brusa to make an impact in the first game of his college career.
In a 24-10 win for the Huskies , the 6-foot-5, 295-pound in-state product of Kennedy Catholic High School was credited with 3 tackles, 1 for loss, and a pass breakup, while he generated some pressure on WSU quarterback Caden Pinnick and was integral in forcing an interception for his classmate, cornerback Jeron Jones, in the second quarter.
Colman-Brusa's early impact earned him a spot on On3's True Freshman Standouts list, and some high praise from his teammates and coaches.
"DCB was lights out," defensive coordinator Ryan Walters said on Tuesday. "He's obviously a physical specimen, and he's really worked on technique, fundamentals, and consistency, and I thought he played really well."
"He's probably the (craziest) human being I've ever seen as a freshman," fifth-year outside linebacker Isaiah Ward added. "He's putting out real good film overall; as a freshman, it's been real impressive."
As he gears up for Big Ten play, which is set to begin in late September, Washington's coaching staff has also done a good job of not overwhelming the freshman early in his career. With fourth-year Elinneus Davis and transfers Darin Conley, Kai McClendon, and DeSean Watts all key pieces in the rotation up front, the Huskies are able to keep Colman-Brusa fresh and maximize his impact.
